Warwick vs Modulus
Warwick vs Modulus
yes i know these aren't the two best brands for basses ever, but they're pretty damn good, so for now i wanna stick with what i know is pretty damn good.
Warwick
Pros
Huge variety of basses
Most between $1-2000, cept for your really high end neck throughs, like thumbs and infinitys
Growl like a beast
Much more available
Tons of great woods
Cons
Wood..=warping/typical guitar wear applies
Strings? (mike you hate them?)
Heavy?
Modulus
Pros
Carbon fiber neck of invincibility
Great instrument
Cons
$2-3000
Not very available (through GC or daddy's)
it seems like modulus is like perfection through technology and warwick is a little more organic and traditional, but its like the traditional is almost better because its so good... i dunno, mike you have a warwick and streetfish has a flea.. i'm not sure what i should get. i have a fretless modulus.. and i thought i'd never think about warwicks again after that.. but i played that infinity a couple days ago and it was awesome.. i dunno which to go with.

Wow you read my mind you biatch. I was seriously making this thread when I came in this forum. OK I have played a Modulus Quantum 6. It was nice. Very modern hi-fi tone. I have a Warwick Bleach Blonde Thumb and a Warwick Corvette. I know the tone you want. Therefore, for you, I'd get the corvette. IMO it's just as good a bass as any thumb for alot less money. THe thumb has balance issues like a fat retard on a 2 inch wide balance beam. The neck dives like a submarine. It plays like a dream though. IT just lacks a defined low end. The corvette on the other hand, is a little less harsh. Less neck dive, more balanced, easy to play, less of a beast then the thumb. It also has more low end then most Warwicks. The strings will tear your fingers to shit. Which doesn't matter if you already have callouses. They were just too noisy for me. I put some Lo-Riders on them, and that was ok. Now I have Thomastik-Infelds on them and I love it. Oh yeah one last thing I think the Corvette looks much classier then the thumb. I like the bigger body. The weight isn't a big deal, I know you have a nice plump leather strap. You can get them passive. Which means no batteries, which I'm sure you like because I know your Q eats them. I think I summed it all up.

i think it depends on the sound you want and how you want to get that sound. for example, a modulus, with the carbon fiber neck and all, allows you to get a more biting attack without as much physical attack with your fingers. personally i prefered the more natural feel of the warwick and i didnt need super attack bite so its good for me. natural finish on the warwick tho is high maintenance.
btw warwicks look better

The two basses I was deciding between when I got mine were a Thumb 5 NT and the Flea 5 string. I played both and decided that the Thumb had more depth to it. The Modulus just seemed to have a deep yet tinny tone that I wasn't really into. I may still pick one up after I pay off the Thumb, but for now I'm much happier with the Thumb. It was prety pricey but well worth it.

If you want a Modulus with the potential for a thicker, more complex midrange tone, definitely look at the Quantum with the Bartolini pickups. The addition of the neck pickup allows for a whole other range of tones you don't get with the Flea, plus Barts are known for having what you could call a "warmer" sound.
I had the opportunity to choose between a Flea 5 and a Quantum 5 for about the same price when MARS was going under. I appreciated the versatility of the Quantum, but the Flea had "the tone" that I wanted. The Quantum could almost get there, but not quite. Obviously the Flea can't do a lot of the things the Q can, you just have to decide what you want.
For any bass purchases I'd avoid Guitar Center, Musicians Friend, and all those people. For Modulus, go to Tony at http://www.planetbass.com. He made me a great trade-in deal on my Flea 5 toward a new Flea 4. Also look at http://www.basscentral.com , they stock Modulus, Warwick, and just about anything else you'd want, I bought my Lakland from them. Both of these places of top-notch, highly reputable, and offer a 48-hour evaluation/return policy. You're simply not going to get this level of service (or price) from GC or MF.

right..but i'll assume you still support the play before you buy thing? so do you suggest playing the model in the store, then getting it online? or is that what the 48 hour period is for>?street fish wrote:If you want a Modulus with the potential for a thicker, more complex midrange tone, definitely look at the Quantum with the Bartolini pickups. You live in Newington? Head down to Danbury to East Coast Music Mall, they stock both Warwick and Modulus and you can compare them and then buy online or there. They're cool people, I've done alot of business with them.GSRLessard14 wrote:

Very good place for basses, but this one guy was a real ass to me about the high-end acoustics. -_- All sorts of shit about how they were too expensive for me to think about, and he kept telling me they were selling at retail prices... I'm usually very happy about the place though. You live in Newington? Head down to Danbury to East Coast Music Mall

Ideally yes, I would want to play before I buy whenever possible. If you find something you like at GC, I would definitely check out these places online to see what they can do.
I bought my Flea 4 without having played that specific bass, but I had played others in the past, and I owned a Flea 5 at that point, so there were really no surprises. I bought my Lakland without ever having touched one, based completely on word-of-mouth, and don't regret it one bit.
The purpose of the 48-hour evaluation is because most people (like me) don't have access to all the different brands of gear out there. Basically you do your research and then just go for it. They both say that most people never take them up on that 48-hour policy. . . generally what happens is you're not really going to get to know an instrument until you've lived with it for several months anyway. Even playing it in a store can't tell you how you're going to feel about it 6 months from now. I had my Flea 5 for 8 or 9 months before I realized I just wasn't feeling the 5-string, and I had another 5-string for 4 years before that. You just have to take a chance. That said, for high-end gear, I'd try to find what I want used, so if you decide to sell, you can usually sell it for what you paid for it and not take a loss. New Flea basses are going for like $2300 these days thanks to the recent Modulus price hike, but used prices are still in the 1100-1200 range, and used Quantums are going from 1300-1500 in good condition.
