Beginner Synths- Keyboards

Just looking around for one, trying some out tomorrow... any reccomendations for a good beginner-ish Keyboard? Should be pretty sophisticated... I just don't really know what I'm looking for, only what I used. MIDI banks, custom sounds, a record option, stuff like that, and not a cheap, gaudy one :/ I really hate that. My budget's about $4-500, I could get one used or whatever, I just need some models to test Any suggestions? All help is very much appreciated ^_^
