quick question

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

quick question

Unread post by kopie101 » Fri Jun 11, 2004 9:56 pm

ok, on my warwick corvette standard(yay!) ive got the stap locks on that came with the bass....but when you put them on they stick out, maybe an inch or little less from the bottom of the bass....is it bad for the bass to rest it on that? ive never bought a stand because i alway rest my bass up against something like my bed, a chair, or on my amp...is that bad?

I dont kniow bass, but they cant be that much different then guitar. As long as the bass sounds the same as it did last time I played it, its fine. Dont give it a chance to fall though.

Are you talking about the end of the strap lock that is mounted to the bass, or the other end that is attached to your strap that plugs in?

I would recommend a stand like this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid ... id/450561/

With that stand, your bass hangs from the headstock, like the guitars on the wall at the music store. This is a lot more stable than the traditional stand that a guitar just sits in, because the bass uses almost all of its own weight to hold itself in place, and your bass is much less likely to get knocked over. Bump into your instrument on this stand, it just starts to sway a little bit. Bump into it on a conventional stand, you're picking it up off the floor.

That said, you should not store your instrument on a stand. A stand (or even leaning it against something) is for when you're taking a break from playing, not for storage. Store the bass in its case. If you don't have one, I'd suggest getting one. At the very least, get a gig bag. I keep mine in its case, and I lay the case flat on the floor, so no pressure is being placed on the neck, the neck joint, even from its own weight. Also, even though there is no active climate control device in the case, the case (or even a gig bag) is going to be somewhat insulated from temperature or humidity conditions. Plus, you're protected from spills, roof leaks, things dropped on it, etc.

And yes, I learned this the hard way. My first bass is worthless now, partly because it was cheap, but mostly because I didn't take care of it.

OK, I was thinking you meant is it bad for the straplocks when the bass is hanging over your shoulder. . . you mean is it bad to sit the bass on the straplock when it is sitting on the floor, I think.

I don't think it will hurt the straplock, but it is a very unstable way to store your bass. Given the money you spent on your bass, get the stand I linked to above (less than $30, compared to potential damage from your bass falling over) and get a case or a gig bag. Now is not the time to skimp. Warwicks are probably even more sensitive to environmental conditions, given that they use an oil and wax finish instead of paint. Take care of your bass.

yeah i know its not very study, but i was wondering if sitting the bass on the staplock is bad for the bass itself, like too much pressure on the wood in one center spot...anyway, im gettin that stand tomorrow anyway so now im just curious
