Official Bass Guitar & Gear Review Thread

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Official Bass Guitar & Gear Review Thread

Unread post by GSR » Wed Jun 02, 2004 11:10 am

there are only a few of us, but some of us have a lotta knowledge to share. i'm looking to post some pretty in-depth reviews of my gear here, maybe put up some sound clips and pictures as well. i'm in school right now, so i'll start later, but i figured this would be a cool little project type thing, give us bassists somethin else to do in here besides argue each others' tabs. :)

Gear I plan on reviewing:
Ibanez GSR200
Ibanez AEB10
Modulus Quantum4 Fretless
Peavy combo amp

Warwick Corvette
Ampeg 410HLF cab
Ampeg SVT-5 Pro head
various other accessories (cables, pedals, rack cases)

the ampeg things might take awhile, i still haven't learned enough to give a full review

i only say i will be reading cause i have a beginner bass in my opinion. i ordered my SX off rondomusic.com with great reviews from another bass site. i love it and i got it for around $120.

my review would be good for a newb, but as for the experienced players here, it is not much. i am fascinated by bad ass basses i see here like warwick and modulous.

but i think this thread is a great idea for everyone.

I had an SX, I loved it when I had it. I definatley think that they are great for the money, in fact I still use it from time to time as a backup or for a different tone. I have it strung with flatwounds and it sounds really good. For the price it has it's minor flaws, but hey, you only paid what 100-200 dollars, great buys IMO.

I had an SX for a while, the 57 P-bass model. I only sold it because I got a Lakland Skyline Glaub (P-bass) and the SX never got played. But the SX is a completely usable bass, all it *needs* out of the box is a good setup. Plus, with the Fender-style models, basically any part that will fit a Fender will fit the SX.

I used the SX in practice for about two months, and I'd have no qualms about taking it on stage, and I would consider myself a fairly experienced player and I've owned much more pricey gear. Its not a USA Fender or a Lakland, but it is a completely usable instrument.

it is really good to hear all these positive Sx reviews because nobody I meet has any idea what it is. even at music stores.

i have the SPB-62 model. it is only different from the SPB-57 inits color options i believe. i have the sunburst.

by the way i would love to hear about the Flea.

I think the difference between the 57 and 62 is the fretboard. 57 is maple, 62 is rosewood. This corresponds to how Fender identifies their reissues.

A lot of people don't know about Essex because they come from one dealer, Rondo Music. I believe the guy at Rondo himself actually contracts with manufacturers in China and Korea to produce these basses, which is why they aren't more widely distributed.
