My Carl Thompson Thread.

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

eBay.com wrote:This is a super rare 1996 Carl Thompson four string bass guitar in as new mint condition! When I say "mint" I really mean it! No fret or figerboard wear, and no scratches or dings or playwear. This must have been in the closet since day one! This is an amazing instrument for multiple reasons. Not only is it impossible to get one now that Carl is avoiding orders due to a four year backlog, but this bass is like getting a brand new one due to the unplayed and perfect condition. The body is multi piece walnut with red maple accent laminations on the sides of the neck as well as one under the solid 1/4" walnut top. You can see this in the close up photos of the awesome hand carved scroll Carl is famous for. The neck is figured maple with an Ipe', cocbolo, or similar reddish hardwood fingerboard. The headstock is laminated with more exotic harwoods, and has the legendary branded logo on the applied maple banner. The pickup is a top of the line EMG with volume, treble and bass pots. This bass has so much low end, it will blow up your speakers if you want! It is beautifully balanced with sparkling highs for great definition. I can truly say that if you are into slap bass or want the ultimate Motown sound, you will not find a better bass. One of the reasons Carl's basses sound so great is that they are 36" scale. I will also supply a few extra sets of extra long scale Ken Smith strings at no extra cost. The bass is stamped with the serial number 3396 (which is the date it was completed) on the back of the headstock. This bass has also been authenticated by the proprietor of the Carl Thompson website, and there is a photo of it there. The action on this bass is super low with no buzz or rattle. Because of the longer scale, you can set Carl's basses up with ultra low action since the string tension is a bit more and the strings do not hit the frets when vibrating. With the appropriate strings, this bass can also be set up as a piccolo bass if you prefer. Carl was famous for making these for Stanley Clarke. The bass is 100% original with the great Sperzel locking tuners, and phenominal Carl Thompson wooden bridge and nut. Probably the most amazing thing about this bass, is that it only weighs 6 pounds! I still can not believe it when I pick it up! The balance is perfect, and there are two areas to attach the locking Schaeller strap buttons to on the lower part of the body so you can get the feel just right for your body type. The neck is straight and true, and the truss rod works perfectly. The great thing about having a bolt on neck Carl Thompson is that you can fine tune the neck angle for killer action. I have had a couple of neck through Thompsons over the years, but they never played nearly as nice as this one. They were also trashed in condition compared to this bass. Bass comes complete with hardshell case, and strap. I bought this instrument as an investment since I know that Carl is slowing down production and refused to take a new order from a friend of mine. Heck, he is in his mid eighties now, and probably wants to retire! Don't you want a piece of history from the man who made basses for Stanley Clarke and Les Claypool? You will not be disappointed in any way with this bass. I know because I am the pickiest collector of fine instruments ever, and I love this thing. To maximize my price, I probably should hang on to this bass until Carl heads on up to heaven, but I don't think he plans on kicking the bucket any earlier than necessary, so I am listing at a low intro price in hopes that those of you in the know will take the auction where it works for all of us. Feel free to email me with any questions, and you may also request my phone number if you would like to speak by telephone. Good luck, and prepare to be amazed by this one in a million bass! NOTE: I am accepting offers on this instrument currently, and may close the auction early if there are no bids at such time. Once a bid is palced, I will not close out the auction.
