Buying a Bass

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Thanks Matt. I've heard the same from several other people as well. Thanks again.

Kahn is gayer than Jay.

I still love you Jay.

Looks like a $100 beginner's bass to me.

Nah, not really. I personally would never even consider a Dean bass, but I'm a bassist of about 6 years now, so I'm past the point of looking at $100 entry level models. I think I have a pretty good knowledge of basses, but I know nothing about Dean, so my initial reaction is "piece of crap." Dean just isn't what I think of, even when I think of solid beginner models. But your expectations are different than mine. What do you want it for?

This guy seems to like his:

edit: I just remembered Jeff Berlin plays a Dean signature model, so they can't be all bad. I'm rambling. You'll get what you pay for, and, depending on what you want/need, that might be just fine.

What do you guys recommend for a short-scale bass? I want something more than a $199 piece of shit. What do you think of the Fender Mustang? What about the Gibson SG bass? Thanks!
