Actually, I'm kind of interested to see how much most drummers spend on their hobby so not really...

oh and carter uses two top hats. if that changes anything.

that wont make any major difference, top and bottom hat are virtualy the same, only slight (very slight) weight and shape variations...nothing major.

my guess is because the top hat is lighter so by having two it allows him to play it open like he does so often and not have it being so over-powering. Plus it makes it crisper.

yeah bottom are usually heavier, It does give him a very nice clear "tick" sound closed and like you said not cutting through the music while open, definately agree, but price-wise no significant difference

well, ive played pretty much everything there is to play, so take it from me drums are THE most expensive instrument that i have found. not only in cost for the instrument, but upkeep as well. i built my current kit, which saved a shit load of cash, but still alot of money. all shells, lugs, heads, etc. was around 2500, which if was assembled and painted from a manufacturer, would actually be around 4500-5000(but to be honest, with the type of finish i put on there, it probably would have been around 6500-7000). then theres the hardware(rack, stands, pedals, etc.) which was another 1500, plus cymbals, theres another 2500. plus upkeep(which for me is around 350 evertime i want new heads and to stock up on sticks) about 3-4 times a year. so tell your friend he doesnt know what the hell hes talking about, and to cherish having a one time fee, no-upkeep instrument(minus mouthpieces, cant ever have enough of those, lol).

Ok, I've gotten myself in a hole here possibly, I just can't justify this in my mind... My trumpet playing roomate made the comment that he wished he had become a drummer instead of a trumpet player because it would of been cheaper. I said I thought that was bullshit so I need some help from you DRUMMERS. He started saying that trumpet players need all these differnt trumpets in different keys and thats expensive. I don't doubt it. He started listing off all thes expensive trumpets that were the best and I said "well the same can apply for drums. I'm sure you can buy a snare that cost $1000 just like you can buy a trumpet for $10,000." He said bullshit that there were not snares that cost that much. I don't know but I would think there would be???? Anyway, I would like to see what kind of money you drummers out there have put into your hobby, and If you were a professional drummer, assemble a set for me and give me a quote. In my mind, it seems like even when you have a drum set you would want to add to it and possibly have different peices for different situations and what not. He seemed to think that drummers don't really buy that much extra stuff and have it sitting arounf for different gigs/situations. Like I said, I'm a bit in the dark here on specifics, but what he says just dosnt seem to make sense to me. Help me out drummers. Also, I want a quote on how much carters set is (I know he changes it around alot, but give an estimate by like what the road crew has listed as his stuff...). Thanks guys, and If i'm totaly wrong please point it out, it wouldnt be the first time, it just didnt seem logical to me...

I was sitting here trying to figure out who wrote drum player and then relized it was me and felt like an idiot. I don't know what I was thinking. I got to talking about trumpet players and I think it just came out. I appologise if I offended anyone

i know that's not true, but im sure that trumpets can play in more then one key, but that some keys needs to have a different one. the valve thing makes sense, same with mouth peice.

It's not that you need 12 trumpets, one for each key, it's (okay this is based off my experience with trumpet from 5 years ago) that trumpets are tuned to Bb, which is 2 half steps below concert pitch. There are trumpets tuned to C, which is concert pitch. Essentially, if you want a Bb trumpet to play an E, you write it as an F#, because the played note is a whole step below the written note for a Bb trumpet. So a C trumpet eliminates that problem.

And again that might all be bullshit but I don't know.
