Nah..I still think he is boring and the least talented. Its funny you say that to try to imagine not seeing Stefan on stage and wonder whats missing. Because I always tell my Dave "friends" that you can't even tell he is up there on stage.
I realize Bass is kind of the background beat and should stay stable throughout the song.....but so is the drummers beat. (Look how bad ass Carter is)
I don't buy the age thing either.
Got to love opinions!

i agree he is good, but they definitely could do with or without him...victor wooten would be a cool bonus...he could certainly do more than that horrendous watchtower intro...a lot of bands could do without their bass player, what a boring position to hold...unless you're fuckin badass like flea or something....stephan is pretty fuckin good on that ants red rocks intro too....

i agree with cave, i read one of those dmb biography books, and some of the stuff i read in there about stefan blew my mind. for example when he was 9 years old he won a national bass competition against people older than him, some of which include tim commerford of audioslave and the dude who plays bass for the ALLMAN BROTHERS hard to believe huh? you should pick up one of their biographies if you doubt any of their music abilities for a second. and just to go back to my first post in this thread that started all this, BOYD RULES, along with the rest of DMB, i will agree that dave is the only one i would pay to see solo though.

Yeah, no offense, but anyone who thinks Stefan sucks or doesn't do much is completely clueless. And if you can't hear his basslines, well then I don't know what the heck you're listening to. Just because someone doesn't solo doesn't mean that they suck. And just because someone solos doesn't mean they're good. That's just retarded logic. Maybe soloing just isn't Stefan's thing. That's fine. Wow, I just can't believe that people think Stefan sucks. Talk to anyone who plays bass, or go out and try it yourself, and you'll see. He's probably better than Leroi at what he does, and he beats the crap out of Boyd blindfolded and with both hands behind his back.
I was the one that started the "official boyd sucks" thread, and while I meant it as more of a joke than anything else, the truth is that his solos are usually repetitive nonsense centered around a group of 3 or 4 notes. Many times they are out of tune. I don't hate him, but I personally know a good handful of violin players that are way better than Boyd, and I'm not talking about professionals. I'm talking about students here at Davidson College and my 17 year old brother, who is quite good, but is by no means any sort of phenom. I really think that most people have no clue what good violin playing is, and that's why everyone thinks Boyd is so good, because I guarantee you that if people listened to real violin music, they'd really not be that impressed by Boyd. He definitely has his moments, but he just doesn't measure up to the level of musicianship of the other guys in the band. I agree that DMB would be totally different without the violin, and I'd hate for them to lose that. But they could be even more impressive if they had a better violinist, and that isn't too hard to find.

i totally agree with tichohans....
stephan shitty? fuck no, hes the shit.
if he wasnt good the band wouldnt have him jump on at the age of 17, sure he doesnt really solo, but, his riffs are shit.
we all love dave dont we, and how often is he throwing down, in a musical theory matter, a solo,----
boyd is good, but, yes, i notice the out of tune action, and some of his stuff is unnecessary..., but i still like him, the band wouldnt be the same, him and leroi together make a really good combo on certain songs,
i saw this video of boyd and bella fleck at a show, playing a sort of "dueling banjos" with a violin and banjo of course, really cool, none of us i think are really saying boyd sucks, just pointing out some of what he lacks, and how it is very hard to find what the rest of the band lacks, as for stephan, his bass beats are the shit, my guitar instructor has been playing for like 30 years, and is a total butt rock guy, and when i used to bring in dave, he would always talk about how phat the bass is, even if its not a crazy solo...
on a side note(this is kind of ironic) my guitar teacher met boyd one time, in vegas, and said boyd bought him and a friend drinks and talked to them for nearly an hour...and get this..., he said dave never even came up..., I just thought that was kind of interesting....

whoa whoa whoa, stefan's watchtower solo's are shitty? go listen to woodstock man, or folsom (the non-edited copy), those intros are outrageous.

stephan is really good...I have never said otherwise....he used to do more spectacular things in the early days and I dont think he got any worse? he did an awesome little jam I saw in a video....but to me, he just doesnt do shit...i dunno, if I really concentrate and focus, I can hear him, but other than that, he doesnt do shit for me...same with butch, I really dont like it when he plays...for one thing when he solos its just boring, and when he plays with the band it sounds too smooth, and not "click clack" like the band used to be....it sounds good, but too symphany-like for me...but hey, butch is a great musician too(i heard his charlie brown which was phenomenal)...boyd just needs to get in tune then he would be really great...

i can see waht youre saying with butch, but i wouldnt say he is boring, it is extremely hard to make the piano an ear catching instrument and only a few people have been able to do it, elton john, billy joel, and a few others, but listen to the solo he does on watchtower at folsom field, i got the cd before i got the dvd and i would have sworn they brought tim in to do that kick ass guitar solo during the jam, but much to my surprise i get the dvd and it was butch jamming (eyes closed) on the piano you have to give the guy some credit, hes also done some pretty awesome stuff in some versions of lover lay down.

i made that mistake about the solo too - anyway, i have no idea how good boyd is, im not one to judge. theres always someone better though. about butch, i think hes good, but i dont like it when he plays with the band. two step on FF just seems weird to me... i dont like it because of the piano.

Well if Butch rocks, then so does easy listening. Boyd at least adds some energy and kick to the band. Every show I've been to, when do people go completely apeshit? Either when dave lets a long scream go, or when Boyd starts dancing with his ten foot wide smile, shaking his head back and forth, while playing away. Butch smooths out the sound too much. His two step solos make me want to go to sleep when I'm at a show. And I dont want to hear about his one watchtower solo that doesnt even count because he's trying to be an electric guitarist. The band loses their "funk" when Butch plays with them. Listener supported sounds like an over-produced studio album at times, largely due to Butch. Now give me Peter Griesar-esq keys, and then we might talk.
