4 and 5 string tab questions

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Unread post by Chadrap127 » Sat Dec 24, 2005 2:02 am

I see that alot of these stefan plays on a 5-string but you have it tabbed out for a 4-string bass.. i myself have a 5-string bass.. and when you tab his tabs for a 4-string bass i dont know what to play on my 5 casue of the drop d that a 4-string uses.. how can i know what to play or convert it to a 5 string tab??

a standard 5-string bass uses the same strings a 4 string uses plus 1 lower string, a B. so a 5 string, from low to high is B E A D G and a 4 string is E A D G. therefore, if the tab is for a 4 string just play the notes on the lowest string on your second lowest string. does that make sense?

Transcribing from a 4 to a 5 shouldn't be that difficult. Just use the 5 fret and 2 fret/2 string octave rules to find out easier positions to play the notes.

Drop D is an alternate tuning.... DADG as opposed to the standard EADG. Virtually none of stefan's parts are played on a dropped D 4-string.
