need some keys

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

need some keys

Unread post by 6_strings_for_life » Tue Aug 23, 2005 12:48 pm

All summer I have been playing the paino that is at my house. Now that college has started I have been aching to keep going, because I was starting to see progress in my playing abilities. I think the remedy is to get a decent keyboard. Now I want to get one that is in the 100$-300$ price range. I played one the other day and the keys felt cheesy and flimsey, but im assuming this was a lower end model. I want to find one that is somewhat like my moms nice real paino. I played a Yahama at sams club and it was real nice and even had a system that said what note was being played, which might help me in learning how to read music ( I really lliked that option). Is there anyone that can point me in the right direction? Or even a few good options to look at. I appriciate it, and im sorry if this subject belongs somewhere else.

thanks in advance!

I have a Casio WK-1800 that I paid about $300 for, including the stand. It's a decent keyboard for the price. It's got 76 touch sensitive keys, and the display shows you not only which note but also which chords are being played. It has tons of other features- most of which I haven't even gotten close to using. It has a synth feature, a pretty large sound bank, I think 32 different rhythm patterns. Obviously it has midi I/O. I've really been quite pleased with it. I taught myself how to read music, and understand the differences between the bass & treble clefs by using that display. I'd check out something in that area, maybe the WK-3200? Lots of features, pretty good quality, and very affordable. I wish I had gotten a model with weighted keys (much more realistic feel) and a portable memory storage feature, though, so you may want to look into that.

I will deffinatley look into that, and I think that the weighted keys are exactley what im looking for. Would it be ok If I asked where you purchased it? After I finish typing this Ill look on musicians friend to see what they have to offer in that field. thanks again

I think I got it at a Sam's Club about 3 or 4 years ago.

Ok i have been reading reviews and posts all day long about keyboards and I have basically narrowed it down to two

Yamaha DGX-305

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=k ... 12/c_lv=1/

Casio WK-3700

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=k ... 73/c_lv=1/

They are both about 400$ and both seem to ahve great features. The Yamaha seems to be aimed a bit toward music education which is just what i want. anybdy else have anything to say about this?

I've seen a few pianos in dorms as well, but also some sorority houses will have them too. A good excuse to make some sorority friends

damn, i lived on dorms for the past two years, and there was never a paino around. Oh believe me, if I go to anyones house and there is a paino, i will be sure to make friends real quick!

The other day i went to the music store and played for awhile. I was kind of in a zoned out mode and i was playing #41 over and over. Till the sales lady came over and told me play something different. :)
