Learning songs by ear: A how to.

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

it happens all too often too, yet people continue to try to argue with you like they're right.

since when? writing this way is whyy so much popular music sounds the same. if you write your progression first and then your melody, you will end up with a cookie-cutter melody. most classical composers and trained modern ones will do the melody, then harmony.
This is for bass. I don't often write my basslines before my guitar parts.

I just wrote what my music teachers have always taught me, as well as Wikipedia. You may be right, but I still stand by what 13 years of my life has taught me.

Wait a second, what fatjack wrote was exactly what I was trying to say.

When I said "relative pitch is for listening" I meant exactly what fatjack said, because I thought it was implied.

I fail at getting my point across.

I have a suggestlet, a no brainer, if you will, you have to have an ear for music!

Yesterday I realized how incredibly obsessed I am with it, I hear any random noise, a chair being moved, I think 'hey, that sounded like f#' all the time!! If you can't hear a note and repeat it or know which one it is, it makes it a lot harder and it takes a lot longer to learn something by ear.

But I am a violinist. . we don't play chords, we play keys. :)

playing by ear is knowing what note to start on for me. From there it's just being able to hear the interval you're looking for before you play it. Years of ear training helps too
