Opinions on a Martin D-15?
Opinions on a Martin D-15?
I recently looked at a Martin D-15 and really liked it...does anyone have any opinions on this guitar good or bad?. The mahogany top seems to have a much deeper tone than spruce. The price quoted to me was $599 with case.
How does this guitar compare to a Taylor 314 (I know that the Taylor is priced a bit higher).
If anyone has one let me know how you like it...
Thanks.

It's a very good guitar for the money. It's made of only mahogony so it doesn't have a whole lot of character. It does have sustain, volume, and a great bottom end though. Drop d sounds wonderful with it.
It's been my only guitar and I'm just starting to grow out of it. I play with my fingers and would prefer a small jumbo or grand concert. I also want something with more tonal complexity i.e. more expensive. Great guitar though.

I'd check out the D-15 Limited Edition w/ a spruce top I believe... Never played one, but I played a normal D-15 and although it was solid wood, the mahogany isn't my style

I think that the Spruce Limited is a musiciansfriend.com exclusive...and the guy at the local shop where I was looking at the mahogany one told me that the Limited was acctually just a "stripped down D-16"BigSpeen3436 wrote:I'd check out the D-15 Limited Edition w/ a spruce top I believe... Of course he was trying to sell me a mahogany D-15 that he had in stock...

I played a really nice one over the weekend. Great bottom end and sustain. If you have any interest in the Grand Auditorium body style, check out the 000-15. You get the deep bass from the mahogany but it's a little brighter in the upper registers than the D-15.

I agree, Martins and Taylors are great guitars but their lower models are not that great. Take a look at an Alvarez if thats your price range they sound alot better than a 600 dollar martin or taylor.Oahu wrote:Firewood. Save your money for a higher end Martin, or buy it from a place where they will trade it in later for the original price, like Buffalo Bros.

I own a D-15 and HD-28V. Acutually go the higher end model first. I bought the D-15 b/c I did not want to take my HD-28V out with me so I decided to buy the D-15. I now like that guitar just as much as my HD so I am affaird to take it out with me also. Go figure. Great guitar for the money. Solid wood and a Martin for 599 or less.

this may be true, but if you can find a used taylor, go for it... I bought a 310 for $650 and I thought that was great.Mjazk26 wrote:I agree, Martins and Taylors are great guitars but their lower models are not that great. Sigh.
The D-15 is not a 'cheap' guitar. Just because it's less expensive than the higher ends (let's face it - even the lowest end martins are not really 'cheap') does not lessen the quality.
I think my D-15 sounds better than any alvarez I've heard, not matter what the price. To each his own, but I get tired of people saying the d-15 is a cheap guitar. Moneywise, maybe. Quality - no.
