Martin ? : D-35 vs HD-35

Unread post by CWMCALL » Sun Feb 29, 2004 8:40 pm

What is the difference between a D-35 and an HD-35? And how does either compare to a D-28?

I don't need another guitar, but wow those "35 series" are gorgeous...

I think the HD-35 has a herringbone binding along the edges where the D-35 does not....same for the HD-28 verses the D-28. I believe it is strictly a cosmetic thing.
As for the difference between the 28 and the 35...I know the 35 has a three piece back...other than that, you can check the Martin website and it will tell you the difference.

The only important difference is the bracing. The d-35 has unscalloped 1/4 bracing compared to the scalloped 5/16 bracing of the hd-35. Not to mention the herringbone binding and zig zag back purfling.

The hd-35 sounds a lot better in my opinion.

both have 1/4" bracing ... the D-35 has non-scalloped bracing and the HD-35 has scalloped bracing and herringbone inlay

imo the scalloped bracing gives the HD more punch

... only if you like the awkward v-shaped neck

i was in a store a few weeks ago where they had and HD 28 and a D 28. The salesman told me the only difference was the herringbone design on the HD 28. He was like, "why would you spend all the extra money for the HD 28 when its exactly the same other than the herringbone design on it." I didn't feel like correcting him about the bracing, but I thought it was funny that he was working in this store and had no idea about the guitars he was selling.

I was choosing between the HD 28 and HD 28v, both sound incredible... BUT the HD 28 felt better in my hands and you've got to go with whatever guitar has the best sound and feel. That was the tie breaker basically :)

the v shaped neck is not the only difference between the 28 and the 28v. the center "cross point" where the soundboard bracing meets (or crosses if you will) is pushed further towards the sound hole on the 28v. This allows the 28v top to vibrate a littlemore freely...less stiff.

I know people were not saying that the neck was the only diff, but i thought i'd throw that out there.......even if this was supposed to be a thread on HD vs. D, not v vs. non-v

I was at a guitar shop the other day....went into the high end room, basically surrounded by martins and taylor and such...and I hear this customer talking to the salesman and the customer mentioned Chris Martin. The salesman looks puzzled and asks....."sorry who's Chris Martin???"

Not only did this prat not know who coldplays Chris Martin was (forgiveable), but he didn't even know who Christian F Martin was.....(while surrounded by like 40 martins, with pictures of CF Martin everywhere and logo's just well everywhere I might like to add).

Even my girlfriend laughed at him. Anyway, point is those guys are REAL sharp.

I love the simplicity and the pure natural tone of the basic D-28 . . . but, I got this Michael Kelly from these boards, and I have no need or desire for a martin anymore. I just love this guitar!!!!!! It will most likely be my main acoustic for years to come.
