Should I Buy? Taylor 214 - $475

Unread post by DMBpgh » Sat Feb 21, 2004 3:55 pm

Had a friend of mine offer me his Taylor 214 since he is low on cash for $475. It is about four months old and scratchless. I am pretty much a beginner and this would be my first acoustic guitar purchase (my first guitar was a lotus electric.) I thought it sounded great, but people on this board don't seem to think the low-end taylors are worth it; but at $15 more than an Alvarez MD80 should I buy? Is this a great Deal? Thanks for help guys.

having never played a 214 i cannot say id buy it over an alvarez which i know are beautiful guitars. they Taylors ive experienced are incredible, but ive heard good and bad of the 214.

alvarez, i'd say. low-end taylors aren't worth it. seagulls and takamines are all right, too. try a lot of guitars out and find something comfortable. make do with what you can.

Looking back, I would have loved a taylor as my first guitar, that would have kicked booty. But on the other hand, I'm glad I learned on a cheap guitar with HIGH action so it conditioned my hands. Taylors are cheating for beginners, if you ask me. :) Now that I can play, I can skip the 200's and get my 914ce or 814ce (haven't decided yet) that I want so badly. :)
