Recommend reasonably priced Pickup I can install myself

Unread post by DT » Tue Feb 17, 2004 4:13 am

Hey, I'm looking to put a pickup in my guitar so i can record straight to the computer or play through an amp... Its not a great guitar so i dont need to spend very much... Im looking at anything under, say 70 bucks and i want it to be reasonably straightforward to install- no soldering is a huge plus... Anyone have any suggestions?

I wouldnt get the dean markeley ones, they dont have volume control, and sound not so hot imho. I have a schaller that I'm jus starting to get to sound right.

so do the woody's have volume controls on them? the only thing i will need this for is recording straight into my computer (which is less of a priority) and playing small open mic night kind of stuff... i would like to avoid an external preamp and volume controls are a plus

open mic night usually has a guy at the sound board that helps people set things up and EQ's everything on the fly. volume control really wouldn't be all that important cuz the guy can do it for you.

cool, thanks... i'll probably end up going for some cheap piezo or an under-saddle like a martin thinline... cheap and no soldering, and no wires hanging out of the soundhole.

I don't know if you're dead-set against a soundhole pickup but the LR Baggs M1 really sounds great, I heard one for the first time just the other day and I was really impressed.

im not really against it but i just dont like the sloppy look of having a wire hang out of your soundhole... do you know if that at least has a volume control on it? i cant tell from anything i read

most popular ones on the boards....also the pickup that I installed on my guitar....is the B-Band AST+A1 or you can go with the B-Band AST+UST+A2.

They are amazing pickups...check em out

yea ive looked at those before.. if i had a really nice guitar i would definitely spring for one of those.... as much as i like my guitar, theres no way im paying that much to put a pickup in a guitar thats that old and cheap... i bought it used for 75 bucks (an unbelievable steal) and even though its cheap and laminate, it plays and sounds better than any guitar ive tried at any stores until you get up at least into the 500+ range- bottom line is i want to be able to plug it in every once in a while and have it sound like a guitar... rest of the time itll be sittin gin my room being played without being plugged in for hours a day

That's why I would recommend the soundhole pickup, so you can take it out when not in use. As for the volume control, there isn't one, that has to be done at the pre-amp/amp/pa.

Well the AST+A1 is the most reasonably priced pickup that you could INSTALL yourself.....now soundhole pickups require no installation so I guess that's your best bet for EASIEST. I am not that big of a fan of those pickups though so oh well

Seriously, if you plan on doing any live performing I would go ahead and just save up enough to get a good pickup. Personally, I'm going for the Fishman Natural II.
