recording mics

hey yall...
wondering your opinions on the best mics to use for stereo mic'ing (sp?) an acoustic... price is sort of a factor (i can't spend like $300/mic or anything like that)... same for vocal mic

if you're recording the acoustic guitar. you really need to stereo microphone your guitar.

As for vocal mics, Shure Sm58's are pretty much industry standard... not awesome, but not bad... and relateivly cheap. i saw them for 79.99 on musicians friend. which is pretty good...

Guitar mics... well i dont know a WHOLE lot about them except i know what works -- condensor mics. 2 of them (to stereo microphone)

(you always want to by them in pairs if you're buying 2 becuase that means they've been tested to have the same signal and that sort of thing... it's like having a cloned microphone = best sound)

hope that helps... basicly what you want is a condensor mic made for acoustic instrumetns.. under the $200/mic range you're not gonna find much difference in sound...

like i said. i think all of those mics will work, but the Shure sm58 is simply a good name to go by. and it's same price but i KNOW it sounds good.

I could be wrong here, but I've always been under the impression that the sm58's are most suited to stage applications as opposed to recording applications. If that's the case, I don't know that I'd look at it for vocal recording if I can get a mic designed for recording purposes at the same price. You should be able to find product reviews of the stuff you posted online. Generally though, if the company that manufactures the mics is a good one, you pay for what you get, so I'd get the most expensive one possible, especially if you plan on recording more in the future. Better to spend now if you're going to use what you buy as opposed to buying crap first, and then slightly nicer crap, and then finally the stuff you should have bought initially. A solid first investment saves money in the long run as you have no need to make multiple purchases.

i recorded my first demo with 57's and 58's... and was pleased but not thrilled. 58's are made for live performances however, but that doesnt mean they dont work.. the vocal microphoning for recording in my opinion is no where near as intricate as recording the instruments.

but yeah your points about spending now... was my exact philosophy
