The PRS Santana SE has gotten excellent reviews. It's a little out of your price range but you might be able to pick one up on ebay for $500 or $600. What kind of music do you play?

Check out most alvarezs...i have an alvarez PD80sc and she's amazing...action is at a good level, sound is bright but not too bright...the pick up has a chromatic tuner built into it...i think the electronics on alvarez's are underated, noone ever says anything about them but they are amazing...cost me $530 with tax...definately check 'em out.

Disregard my comment about alvarez's...i thought your post said best acoustic-electric...you could always check out an epiphone les paul, i think they run like $450 or so.

Which strat would you recommend? Ive tried the highway 1 and thought it sounded so so. That was after playing an sg. I still havent played a double fat strat.

if you're going to get a strat, get a strat copy from G&L. they're better strats than the ones fender is chugging out. it's called a G&L Legacy, and it sounds great. should run you around $500.

here are reviews for the G&L Legacy:

also take a look into Godin's. i was looking for the answer to this same question, and i just recently ordered a Godin SDxt Custom.

check out these reviews.

both excellent all around, especially for the price. hope that helps.
