HELP! Guitar Humidity????
HELP! Guitar Humidity????
I have a new Martin D28. I bought a Planet Waves Humidier and a hygrometer. The most I can get the humidity in my guitar case is 33%. I bought a room humidifier, no good. Any other sugesstions?????
that'll have to do...
if you have a drafty room, try and find one that is less drafty.
is it consistently 33% or just that's the highest it got once in a while but it's normally like 15 or something. cuz if you can get 33% consistently then you'll be ok for the next few months before it warms up.
or you could construct an insulated box and humidify that and you should have no prob using room humidifyer in there to get up to 50%.
i have asmall drafty room where i can never get teh RH above 30% myself so i just kleep the guitars close to the humidifyer, even letting the mist from the humidifier fall down on the case. you just don't want the vapor to condense and make droplets on the guitar.

Find an empty pill bottle in your house. The bigger kind rather than very small kind. Poke a bunch of small holes in it. You can use the end of a scissors or something sharp. Lots of holes all around bottle. Then take a paper towel or 2, wet them, then ring them out. Stuff them in the bottle and close lid and stick in your case. This should increase humidy along with your planet waves. It did for me. Re-damp paper towels as needed. Usually every 5 days or so. Maybe less since it seems to be very dry in your house.

The humidity is consitently about 33%. When it gets lower I recharge the planet waves. Thank you for you suggestions. I am going to try the pill bottle and I will move the guitar closer to the humidifier. I may try buying a new humidifier, the kind that lets out a fine mist. The one I have lets out no mist, it blows air through a wet "wick" which is supposed to be healthier than the kinds that let out a fine mist. But I think the health of my baby is currently more important than my own

I think 33% would be fine, if the hygrometer is correctly calibrated. Just watch for drops. My room went to 25% for no more than 24 hours, and it cracked my fretboard. Now I do my best to keep my apartment at 50%

at 50 % i have to be careful cuz i get condensation dripping down my windows and causing water damage to my stuff.QuattroDore wrote:I think 33% would be fine, if the hygrometer is correctly calibrated. I've been having issues all winter. I've kept my stuff around 30%, but I got a John Pearse K-saire system in addition to my dampit and it has helped. I've also found a good guitar case helps. I can keep the humidity regulated much better in my martin case than my no-name one.
I know I'll need another setup come springtime, not much I can do about it.

no winter is the worst! if you can tough it out through the winter you'll be golden the rest of the year...infoghost wrote:I've been having issues all winter. My problems have gotten much better now that I have the guitar in it's proper case. The original had some issues, so the ordered me a brand new one. While I was waiting, I had it in another case, and the humidity was always low, probably because of the extra room in the case. Now that it's nice and snug in the Martin case, the humidity is much, much higher. I am not sure if it's the tight fit or simply that the case is much more airtight than the other. Either way, my guitar is much happier now.

Hey I have a Question??
If a soundhole sinks and warps from not being moist enough, can this be recovered by adding a humidifier. The soundhole on my dc1e seems to be a little "sunk in". I assume the previous owner didn't use a humidifier. I have been putting the guitar along with a humidifier in the case overnight or when I am not using it and it seems to be helping it swell back to original shape. But it is still not at 100%. Maybe it is supposed to be a little concave? Or will it recover more? And how do you check the humidity? Thanks for any input or sharing similiar stories.

If you can't get the RH higher, use a couple more humidifiers. I read on Taylor Forum of a guy that used two Dampits, a Keyser and a soap box to keep his guitar correctly humidified.
Another cheap humdifier to go with the pill box is to get a plastic travel saop box and a sponge. Poke holes in the soap box and wet the sponge. That will help also.

I will try that soap box thing. I have a planet waves soundhole humidifier right now. But do you think the sunk top will revive itself 100%? Also how do you measure the humidity? Thanks underdog

I don't think the sunken top will ever be completely correct again. But more humidity will help. To donate humidity, go to Radio Shack and get a hygrometer. They're only $20 and are pretty accurate.
I've got an Epiphone that was never taken care of properly so the top is bulging terribly. I added a couple humidifiers and the top seems to be more solid. It used to sound brittle and fragile when you pushed on the top. Because of the bulge, the bracing on the top has come apart and rattles ALOT when you play. I don't expect it to be correct again, but I'm also not going to play it. My friend gave it to me and my Taylor Big Baby sounds lightyears better. Just going to fix it up and give it to someone who's looking to play.
