a guitar i want to buy....thoughts?

Unread post by Jay » Sun Dec 29, 2002 4:28 am

ok i've made it apparent enough that i am new to all this...anyway, i am going to buy an electric because i want to play both.

here's what i think i want, after falling in love with it in the store:

http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/lespaul/lpsh.html

either the ebony (which looks much better in person than in the pics) or the cherry. :)

it's also here

it's about what my price range is, so i'm wondering, for the money (or a little (very little) bit more), is this the best i can get?

i've been reading all these reviews of it and they all seem to like it. it sounds very very good, at least from what my inexperienced ears can gather. it's made in america...it's a les paul :D

the guy in the store told me he actually liked the sound better than the LP studio (i actually agreed with him but i only heard the studio for a min).

my roommate has an LP custom but it's from epiphone. he was telling me that he likes it a lot (and it does sound good), but i've also heard a lot of bad things about epiphone, and this gibson is pretty cheap.

so basically i am lost. anyone want to show off a lot of guitar knowledge and help me out? 8)

also - the guy in the store said it was cheaper than the other LPs cause "it had no bindings." i'm comfortable enough in my sexuality to admit that i don't know what the hell that means.... is that a bad thing?

thanks :)

gotta do my job and be a HUGE newbie.

Honestly, the best thing that you can do is save the money and buy the epiphone. The only true difference in the two is where it's made. I have had nothing but amazing luck with my Epiphone's and I'd recomend them to anyone...

I don't know much about gibson's but I'd hesitate to say this...although it could be true...I know Gibson has a line in Japan that you can often find on e-bay that truly are identical to Gibsons, made in the same factory, they just say something different on the headstock. I'll try and talk to someone who knows more about this...

if i were to buy an electric guitar... which i wouldnt.. but pretending i was... i'd buy a gibson.. or a PRS (since i know PRS personally, this is easily arranged for myself...)but i dislike electrics.

i'd suggest staying away from epiphone. i had one and i was nothing but dissatisfied with it.

The epiphone doesn't capture all the sound you can get out of a Gibson...

it's weird having this thing. i haven't played it on an amp since the store, because i go to school in NY and im home for break, and if i buy an amp now i'll have to mail it and it will cost $$$. so i just sit and play it all quiet, occasionally make out with it...you know.

I would just sit down and play stuff. If you like the way a thing sounds/feels GET IT! Don't let anyone elses opinions sway you! Some of the most successful guitar players out there, are successfull cause they just did their own thing!

You should stop screwing around with electric guitars and spend the money on a Taylor acoustic/electrics, and then buy an acoustic pedal with a bunch of cool effects and you'll be set. I like the Taylor 614 quilted maple, its very deep and just overall kicks ass!!

Martins are good, but they just dont have the bass and tone that the taylors have.
