you are all way off on this one.hangulmalmotayo wrote:what's 80/20 and 92/8 and stuff and phosphor bronze and all that stuff. what's the difference and what are the numbers for?
80/20 is a bronze alloy. as is 92/8. it's based on the amount of copper and zinc and phosphor etc.
anyways. 80/20 straight bronze and has a thicker heavier tone. kinda sounds like older strings.
92/8 is phosphor bronze.

yeah so 80/20 is the ratio of copper to zinc? and 92/8 is the ratio of bronze to phosphor?grock wrote:you are all way off on this one.hangulmalmotayo wrote:what's 80/20 and 92/8 and stuff and phosphor bronze and all that stuff. what's the difference and what are the numbers for?

suppose I could surf the net on this one, but just in case you know.
good, and you?
Re: string number stuff
you're right on the 80/20. but 92/8 is kinda tricky it is usually like 92% copper 7.7% zinc and .3% phosphor.gravedigger wrote:yeah so 80/20 is the ratio of copper to zinc? and 92/8 is the ratio of bronze to phosphor?grock wrote:you are all way off on this one.hangulmalmotayo wrote:what's 80/20 and 92/8 and stuff and phosphor bronze and all that stuff. what's the difference and what are the numbers for?

i work in a factory where all of our tanks are made with different grades of steel and i am always amazed at how a .1% change can drastically change the properties of the alloy. like some steel is magnetic and other is not and it's all because of a small change in the %'s. chemistry is crazy!gravedigger wrote:hmmm, its funny how that little bit of phosphorous in the alloy would make a difference, but it does have a different sound and it doesn't tarnish as quickly. interesting.

yeah that's more of a topic from solid state physics. magnetic moments and atomic structures and stuff like that.
there was a question on millionaire today that asked what metal is mixed with copper to make bronze and the answer was Tin. Zinc wasn't one of the choices. actually the question was: What is TRADITIONALLY used with copper to make bronze. Zinc and Tin must be close in the periodic table. Maybe bronze is just any alloy with copper as its main constituent. I don't know.
