Bridge Pins? . . .

Unread post by Lexington Steele » Wed Dec 03, 2003 9:58 am

I'm and going to be putting in a bone saddle into my guitar. But what about bridge pins? How much of a difference do they make? Is there a certain material to go with. I found some brass pins that increase the sustain and brightness. Anyone have brass pins? There are also solid bronze pins that increase sustain and brillance. Is there a difference between brightness and brillance? Both my saddle and pins seem like a cheap plastic so i would like to up grade them.

this is another arguable topic.

denser pins can create more sustain as they increase the mass of a point where the strings contact.

more mass=more sustain. that's why heavier tuning machines increase sustain as well.

brilliance/brightness are both the same idea but are very qualitative. i'd say metalic is a way to describe what i hear. which makes sense since you are adding a metal component where there used to be a synthetic.

you are not going to see the same difference as you would with a new saddle or nut but i'd say to go ahead and experiment with it.

So when you say metalic, do you mean it will sound "tingy"? I would like to have more sustain but i don't want to loose the "warm" sound of the guitar.

ebony will let you keep the warmth. a bone saddle will give you more sustain than new pins i think.

yep you're right. you can also get bone bridge pins, or stronger still would be Tusq synthetic. they rave about tusq bridge pins over at the Martin forum.

you won't lose warmth on you tone, it will just project highs better. that's what increasing brilliance/brightness means.

again, you can just buy a set and try it out. just be careful cuz bridge pin size varies by brand and even by model. alot of time they have a measurement so you can compare and make sure they will fit your guitar. if anything you can just sand them down a bit.

thank you so much! :D well i think i'm just not afraid to drill a hole in a guitar. that's where genius starts. plus i've done more researching and asking these very same questions for all of the 3 years i've been playing than i really care to admit.

I have a bone saddle and bone pins on my D-15 and it works out great. Just experiment with different pins to find what you like. The bone pins on my hd-28v dont sound that great. You can get them at http://www.maurysmusic.com
