Help with buying a first bass

Unread post by stlcardinal35 » Mon Dec 01, 2003 2:39 pm

I've been reading these boards for a while (as a new poster, I feel i should say how great this site is, too :D ), and I figured I would start posting some too.

I've been playing guitar for about 4 years now, and now I'm looking to get a bass so I can play in my school's pep band. I'm looking to spend around $200-400. Right now I'm looking at a Fender Standard Jazz bass, or possibly the Squier version of the J-bass. For all you bass players out there, do you think it's worth paying the 200 or so more to get the Fender? I'll spend plenty of time learning bass, but I suspect I'll always be primarily a 6-string player. Any other recommendations in that price range would be great, too. Thanks!

i second the ibanez vote, a friend of mine has one and it is yummy. I have a squier p-bass and I was impressed with its quality (considering its guitar equivalents are amazingly shitty).

might as well throw my line out there too...

I am looking at spending up to $1,000 on a bass...or around that area...I need some insight on what to look for, but there is no hurry...this would only be a possibility up the road at least a year...

anywho...IM or PM me with any help, thanks :)

i third it. i've said it 928375 times, but you can't go wrong with the gsr200... i've had it for a year, and it just gets better once the wood starts to come alive. i don't like fender basses..... .... i've never owned one though... but i played a jazz once...bleah... *shrug* just personal preference. :?

ibanez makes great high end basses for pretty cheap. i'm gettin a $600 one for christmas (see another thread  ) if you got lots of green paper to throw around.. check out anything that warwick makes (stefan used one model, dolphin pro I, on listener supported, BIG bucks though :) ), and play em at your music store... *salivate* simply awesome. modulus makes incredible basses too, but there are only i believe three models to choose from... the flea (stefans current basses), the quantum series (also see listener supported) and one other model.. check their site, modulusguitars.com ? definitly check out http://www.musiciansfriend.com and http://www.bass-guitar-review.com/ to aid your quest! AIM me if you wanna talk more bass. :D

Thanks for the advice guys. It sounds like I need to check out some Ibanez basses. I just bought an Ibanez GAX70 for my first electric over the summer, and I've been very happy with it, so maybe Ibanez is the way to go. I'll have to get over to Guitar Center and play some of these so I can have a nice little Christmas present to myself :D

I have a red one, and I love it (for a $200 guitar). I don't remember seeing a butterscotch color last summer when I bought mine. I'm sorry you have to sell yours. That would be like losing a member of the family for me (almost).
