A really nice guitar....

I was feeling like now is a good time for me to get/think about getting a guitar that is truly top-of-the-line. I have a Takamine EG540SC, and its wonderful, but I was just trying to get an idea of what the absolute best quality acoustic-electric guitar I could get in the 1000 to 2000 dollar range. Also, do you think its even worth it to buy a guitar in that range or is "top of the line" usually more costly than that (shoudl I wait till I can spend more?)? I was looking at the 914 and 814 from Taylor, though I also like the 910 and 810. Any advice on other stuff? Thanks!

Sure. How about a Martin HD-28V. Or a Lakewood. Look around, try other stuff. Don't limit yourself to just one brand.

Yeah, definitely - I'm looking to find a really really good guitar, one that will really improve my playing, in the 2000 dollar range, and any brand that does the trick is good. :)

Id go with a limited Taylor if your looking for something not a dread, if your looking at a dread then go the Martin route

one thing i like about lakewoods is that you can pick and choose what special things you want with the guitar (what inlays, even getting your signature in the 12th fret in abalone!) - do all guitars have those options? If not, which ones do? I found all this at http://www.samusic.com, which is a pretty sweet site.

umm... you can do that with pretty much any guitar... its called a custom shop.

oh ok, dumb question i guess - Do any other guitar types have that as an option upon purchase like Lakewood does? I would assume Taylor and Martin do....

No, Lakewoods are all handmade by Martin Seelinger, and thus, can be customized however you want since he's making it for you. To customize a Martin or Taylor, you HAVE to go through the Custom Shop, which is more expensive.

Hey, thanks for all the responses, its really helping me - one other thing - what other guitars are custom made like the lakewoods for a reasonable price (like the price of a lakewood or less) - just want to get a sense of how much it costs....

Well, you can look at those other handmades at samusic. There was also another luthier that someone mentioned here a few weeks back that looked good, but I can't remember who it was and couldn't find it when i searched.

i have a martin, friend has a taylor, and other friend has a lakewood, all great sounding guitars, mines a d-35, the taylor is a 714 and the lakewood was cusom made, you will find alot of people who are only martin/ taylor oriented but just play them and find what you like, nothign wrong with any of these guitars, just my advise...peace
