Recording Yourself

sorry i keep making posts asking questions, but this is the first time i have had a resource as good as this one. This ? is about recording myself on my computer, what equipment do i need if any and is it possible for me to record my self simply using the microphone i already have in my computer. What is the easiest way for me to do this. Thanks for all the help fellas i really appreciate it.

oolsky, for the covers of the dave songs, i just used the crappy little mic provided with the computer and used the "sound recorder" program. What I did with that is estimate how much time a song would take, let the recorder record that much time of just anything, and then use the effect "decreaseb speed." if i wanted 4 minutes of recording time, i could just let a full 60 seconds record, use decrease speed, which would make the track 120 secs long, then use decrease speed again to make track 240 secs long to record on. if i wanted 5 minutes of recording time, i recorded 37 or 38 secs of nothing, decrease speed to 75, decrease speed to 150, decrease speed to 300, and voila, a 5 minute track to record to.

there's also a good amount of free software out there that is much more high tech than this and provides much better quality sound. i just don't know the names of the best programs. i'm sure a few of the folks here could help you with that.

i use cool edit pro 1.2a the cracked version. i used kazaa and found the install file. It's like 10 megabytes. that's a digital multi-track and i've been using it to record my cd..

If you have some money to spend on equipment i can make some fine suggestions. i know quite a few good resources to buy and quite a few good things to use.

Xoosh, i just downloaded that cool edit 2000 and it seems pretty awesome, i know this may be a big task but can u give me a quick overview of how to do the most important things since im new to recording and this program. i would like to know how to record my music and then go back and sing over it instead of doing both at the same time, and any other cool things u can explain how to do, thanks man.

i dont think cool edit 2000 has the multi track part to it. i suggest 1.2a if you want to learn from me. i can put up a tutorial thursday.

I downloaded Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and it has multi track. Would it be very different than 1.2?

I have soundforge, but don't know shit about it. It's kind of like photoshop...a million buttons and commands that I have no idea what they do.

A SF tutorial would be quite helpful, but not necessary.

If you have an elec/acoustic i would suggest running the cable from your guitar to your line in port, just put an adapter on the cable to make it fit. If you have the recources, I would suggest the SoundBlaster Audigy. It's a bay that you install in your computer that has line in slots specifically designed for recording instruments.

i know soundforge is excellent, i recorded some background for another band with that at a friend's house...your reference to photoshop is right on, though. you have to mess with it for like a year and get used to what everything does. ive been using this cheapass magix music maker thing that i already had. its not too bad, i can do up to 16 tracks and mess with surround a little.
