Well,
nobody has really talked about it much here, but I think it needs to be put out there:

buy a bone saddle and equip your acoustic!

I just put the finishing sanding work into it and slapped it on along with new strings; let me tell you that it a world of difference! Clearer tone, more balance (each string rings out its pitch loud and clear, but they sing in one accord), and much better projection!

all for under $20 with some elbow-grease, you too can have your bone saddle!

interested, check this link out:

http://www.taylorguitarforum.com/forums ... light=bone

if you are STILL interested past this, then I could hook you up with the guy who did mine; just send me a pm about it.

well, thought you would all like to know ;)

Did you replace the nut as well with bone? I have always though about doing that with one of my guitars to see if I like it. Where can I get a bone saddle at?

I have a bone nut and saddle on both my Martin and 314K. I have to agree they do make a difference when set up correctly. I've read that you can get a dud bone saddle/nut (which is one reason why Taylor uses Tusq), but I haven't heard one myself.
Any good guitar tech. at your local guitar store can get and install a bone nut/saddle. The saddle is not much of a hassle to install. The nut, on the other hand, can be a bitch. That's why I would have a good guitar tech (one with experience) install it.

I have some no name acoustic that my uncle got for $50 and 2000 Marlboro Miles from the Marlboro catalog, haha, I know. But it actually doesnt sound that bad. I would like to do anything I can to it to make it sound better though so Im interested in this bone saddle/nut idea. Can you help me out a little fire and is there anything else I could do to it (tuners maybe) to make it sound better? Thanks.

Probably not. But hey, if you care about a little better sound and don't mind investing $20 in a $70 guitar, go ahead. :)

its louder and more balanced...

listen...I got ahold of this guy over at the Taylor Guitar Forum and he said he made them...yadayadayada, I sen't him the money and I got the saddle in the mail...I used his pamphlet to customize the size of it to match my Tusq saddle I already had...took some tima and patience, but I love its new sound...

TBill, forget the stoeres, you run a very VERY small risk if any of somehow harming your guitar...

LIKE I SAID, IM or PM me and I can hook you up with this guy who did mine...

i just finished mine. WOW. it took a long time sanding, because i was so careful, but it was definitely worth it. it's so much louder and clearer...more bass...sounds like a new guitar, AND the strings are a month old, so i can't wait to hear it with new strings.

everyone should do this. i'm starting to wonder what my roommate's 310 will sound like with one of these...the thing's already a cannon.

you don't want to buy cheap bone. bone is a natural product and will contain inconsistencies in the lower grade stuff. little voids that lead to lost tone and volume and differing string volumes.

good bone will be very hard and solid, leading to good energy transfer from the strings to the top wood, resulting in an increase in tone, volume and balance.
