Protools is the software made by digidesign (a subsidiary of Avid, probably the world's leading video equipment company). digidesign is widely regarded as the best audio equipment company, too. Anyway, it's the software that powers all of their hardware and it's absolutely amazing. It's got somewhat of a steep learning curve, though. And the free version only works on Windows 98, so if you have newer than that you're out of luck (I don't really understand why though...).

The thing you saw was a controller for pro tools. It gives you hands on control of playback, effects, faders, and almost everthing else. This to me is the best way to go cause I like a more hands on feel. Oh and it also connects via firewire/usb so it's extremely easy to set up and you don't need an expensive soundcard or anything else for that matter.
The program should work fine if you plug your mixer into the sound card.
