to be more specific, id shoot myself in the face before buying an epiphone.

i personally would shy away from the epiphones. i bought a Gibson Les Paul Special for about $680, and though it is still a low end guitar, i adore it and it SINGS compared to my roommate's epi. they use the same pickups as they do on the expensive gibbsons, just a different body style.
make sure and play a few in the store because they look/feel inconsistant. i think mine is beautiful but i saw a damn lot of ugly ones before i found it....the finishes are weird on them....well some of them.
check it:

btw $749 is too much, you can find it for 100 less....
here is mine:

and dont make fun of the sign on my wall! :p

and PS...my roommate's epi is a les paul custom. it's a cool guitar and all, but i'd shy away from epiphone, especially if you are getting the custom because those are what, $500? that's not enough for a LP Supreme or anything, but it is still a chunk of change...spend it wisely and all...

Epiphone in the long run isn't good, but to have one before you get the Gibson, it's good. They aren't horrible, they are much better than most low line guitars.
You know that I vote for the Les Paul custom, it's more more well rounded than the SG.
So, get the guitar, keep it in good shape, and once you have the rest of the money, trade it in, and get a gibson. Epiphones Les Pauls are perfect for that. So, LP, all the way.

My suggestion is to look at some of the Gibson Special Faded models. They have a few choices, the Flying V, the SG, and the LP. I went ahead and bought the Gibson SG Special Faded for $599. It has great sustain, a cool finish, and moon inlays on the neck. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the more expensive models (ex. it has vintage tuners, small moon inlays, and no pickup covers).
The nice thing is it sounds GREAT and is rather inexpensive for what it offers. It's also a HELL of a lot lighter than a LP.
The Gibson Les Paul is by far my favorite guitar in the world, but from cost/playability perspective, the SG is the way to go. Don't pay ALOT extra for things that don't really matter in the end.

im kind of interested in the gibson faded models now that you guys have mentioned them. but see, my problem is, is that im not an electric guitar player. im an acoustic player. i just want to upgrade my electric so i can start fiddling around and learning some electric styles and such. so w/ that in mind, i don't want to spend a lot of money on an expensive guitar that has the chance of not being played as much as my acoustic. i wish i had a good guitar store around me, i could look a lot more. oh well, back to the internet for research. thanks for the ideas so far.
Seriously consider that Gibson SG Special Faded. I was in your boat at one time. I'm an acoustic player who uses the electric for fun. I just figured that if I was going to spend money on a guitar, I should make it a decent one so that when I got better, I wouldn't want to get rid of it. It's a great guitar and I love it. Definitely a guitar you can grow into.
Look on the Harmony Central website and look up some reviews if you're interested.
If you get it at a place like Guitar Center, be ready to take it to a good guitar shop and pay the few bucks to get it set up correctly. It's a good place to get good prices, but GC doesn't take care of their inventory. At least go play one and see how you like it.
