Electric guitar advice..

Unread post by isaac » Tue Oct 14, 2003 6:13 pm

all right, i need some advice on what electric guitars to take a look at. i've already asked fatjack and elliot and they've helped me a lot. i have some options i'm seriously considering, but i'm going to take a look at others just to have some perspective.

any suggestions on amps and pedals are also welcome.

basically going to purchase this guitar in about a year or two after i save up enough money, which'll include graduation present money, and will most likely be in the neighborhood of a minimum of 2-2.5k.

so with that in mind, i'm looking for an electric that i'll be pretty much set with for a good long time. probably going to play a lot of blues and jazz, if that helps out any.

with elliot's advice, i've started heavily considering doing a fender custom shop order and picking myself up a Closet Classic Olympic White 60's strat.

http://www.fender.com/gear/gear.php?partno=0150700

still thinking about possible cosmetic touches...but i have a year and a half to deliberate that. ;)

anyway, any help is greatly appreciated. :) thanks ahead!

isaac - for pedals i have something for you - a digitech rp300. due to my lack of funds i really need to sell it... its been for sale for a while but nobody has asked about it in about a month.. its an amazing tool.

http://www.digitech.com

anyway, you dont need to spend a minimum of 2-2.5k to get a quality guitar. i didnt pay that much for my godin and its much better than any les paul ive played/heard (and les pauls are better than strats IMO)

my LGX is incredibly versatile.... LR baggs acoustic bridge, string through body, beautiful cherryburst flamed maple top, 2 seymour duncan humbuckers with coil taps, built in acoustic eq, locking tuners, 3 way switch (electric/blend (for a hollowbody sound)/acoustic), 3 outputs (like 3 way switch), 5 way pickup selector (for the humbuckers) and probably something else that im too tired to mention.

only instrument that can do more is the LGX-SA or LGXT which both have synth access (T has a tremolo).

anyway, list price for my LGX was $1800, so you can obviously get it for less than that. the LGX-SA i believe has a list of $2000.

if you can, play one. theyre amazing guitars.

hijack question along the same lines. I'm getting a new electric too, but i really can't afford as much as i want. i don't play electric enough to spend more than about 7 hundred on it. so im looking into ephiphone les pauls. i can get a custom for about 700. any suggestions on anything better than that for about that much???

sorry isaac.
i don't know how that guitar plays, but it looks pretty sweet. im just not big on strats.

Appsoldier:

if i were in your situation, i might consider buying an epiphone and replacing the pickups (with seymour duncans), tuning machines, and maybe even the wiring.

lol.

some epiphones are pretty awesome, i have a hollow body epiphone dot, which in my opinion, plays better than some gibson dots.

Are you looking for single-coil or humbuckers?

Don't waste time on suping up the Epiphone. Instead, buy one, and just start to save up money slowly. Then when you have enough saved, trade in the Epiphone, and use all the money to buy a Gibson. Then you don't have to mess with wiring or installing new pickups. You just get the Epiphone to tide you over for some years til you get the Gold . . . I mean Gibson.

I agree. Epiphones never impressed me. Everyone that I know that has one had it fall apart after a few months. They don't seem to be put together well and have a lot of flaws. If you do get one, make sure you look at the exact guitar you are buying very closely (don't buy any epiphone you haven't played, especially online). Check out little things, like making sure the bindings don't have cracks or flaws. Its hard to find a really good epiphone, but they are out there so make sure you look around.
