New Electric Guitar - Need Advice

Unread post by goalten106 » Mon Jul 28, 2003 10:44 pm

i need some sound advice from you guys. im looking to buy a SOLID electric guitar for around $450 (willing to spend more though). ive been playing (i.e. addicted) for almost a year, and got a really good deal on a used amp. i want something thats not at the very top of the line, but at the same time something that i will be content with several years down the line and wont be kicking myself for buying.

i tend to gravitate towards strats and telecasters. whats your guys advice on those two makes? whats the difference between specials, standards, americans, etc.? any other brands i should try?

oh boy....

i searched for my electric for about 6 months. i went through many many brands.

the first thing i wanted was a mexican (standard) fender strat. it has 1 less fret than an american strat. however, i dont like the sound of it. it has 3 single coil pickups and is only good for clean. not versatile enough for me. nothing else in the fender line hit me either. i didnt really like the telecasters.

i tried many others...
ESP (suckage)
Gibson (good but expensive)
Epiphone (suckage)
G&L (not bad, not my liking though)
Ibanez (suckage)
Line6 (really really bad for guitars, good for amps)
Washburn (sucks)
PRS (good but expensive)
Carvin (good on paper, but i dont like the pickups)

So eventually i found out about Godin. i love it to death. its the best guitar ive ever played and you can get it for about $800. you can see pictures of mine in the address in my signature. http://www.godinguitars.com for information on it

fender american standard stratocaster.......... has worked for 50 years. Don't fix it if ain't broke definately applies. I have a mexican standard and I got lucky to get a good one..... the quality control on non-U.S. isn't good so go for american standard.

i would have to agree if the dont fix it if it aint broke comment, but the question is why did fender try? the old fenders are so much better than the ones they make now.. maybe when leo left the company he took the quality along with it.

yea, there were some problems when fender was owned by a bowling company but now they are back on it........ quality control is back where it used to be and the stratocaster is still the most heavily bought and copied electric guitar........ another great cliche besides if it ain't broke don't fix it. Imitation is the best form of flattery.

definately a fender strat. i have had one for about 2 years now, and i am more than happy with it. I have a standard (mexican) strat, sunburst, and it is awesome. I would suggest getting an American Strat instead of the standard, it is made somewhat better but does cost a bit more. You could also look at the fat strat. it has the same basic specs as a Standard Strat but in a one humbucker, two single-coil pickup configuration. just what sounds best to you is what you should get. Play with a lot of them and see what seems good for you.
Rock on, brother...i play guitar
