How do Blues musicians get that distinct tone from their amp

How do Blues musicians get that distinct tone from their amplifiers? Are they buying expensive vintage gear?
I've heard that buying a brand new bassman amp is not smart. That it's better to buy one that has been well used because the speakers age and eventually bring in that desired tone. What would someone have to pay to get an amp that gets that lead tone and where would they go to get it? Are Blues musicians doing something that everyone else isn't? What's the secret? I want a bassman amp. How would I go about finding one with the best tone? Any pointers?
