Recording equipment questions

I am new to recording, and I just had a few questions I hoped to get some oppinions on. I was thinking about getting one of the new Macbooks, but noticed that it didn't have firewire anymore. Do you think I am better off spending the extra money to get the Macbook pro that has the firewire inputs, or do you think the USB peripherals are just as good? Any suggestions on midrange equipment that might be better than others? Thanks

Do they really not have firewire?

I would probably save up for the Pro then or find an older version for cheaper. Pair it with this:
