I have my guitar strap tied on just above the nut. The strings above it and the high and low e pegs will keep it in place. Only thing that sucks about a "shoestring" strap though, is the fact that you cant really take it off if you want to.....least not mine anyway.....I tied the string in a super strong knot to my strap. It kinda sucks putting it into a case like that cause you have to wind up the strap and put it in the part of the case where the headstock is.

they make little quick-release clips for that.

I know, but why spend the cash ya know? By the way Shane, Martin makes a strap button that you can attatch up there too. Might be worth checking out.

It costs $5 to have your local guitar shop drill a peg into the back of the neck (where it is normally.) I'd just go do that...especially if its an inexpensive guitar. The convenience is well worth it. Do a search, and you'll find some testimonials.

I prefer the strap to go to the base of the neck, or just in that area, when I have to have the strap around the head of the guitar it always slips and I am afraid I'll drop the guitar.

You can install strap button on the heel pretty easily assuming you know the proper location for your guitar. Here are some links for Taylor and Seagull, plus a general web page on this:

I did it on my S12+ no problem. Drilled a pilot hole and screwed it on after rubbing some candle wax on the screw. I had one put on my Martin for $20 and after I saw it, I was determined I could do it. Just be sure you get a felt "washer" so your finish isn't scraped any more than necessary. Check your local shop.

Attaching the strap to the end of the neck by the nut is not the best idea as it adds unnecessary tention to the neck. Plus the strap seems to get in the way and the guitar doesn't feel as stable as when the strap's attached at the body. Hope this helps.

I had a nut put in the heal of the neck on my alvarez for 2$ (the cost of the part) it was done in 5 minutes. Just bring it to any guitar shop that has a luthier.

I just want to dispell the notion that you will cause any damage by straping it this way.. you won't. The damage you may do though is wear away the finish with a shoelace rubbing or etc[/quote]
