Best Place To Keep A Guitar?

Unread post by duluoz » Wed Jun 25, 2003 10:42 pm

Since I just got my new D-15, I was wondering where I should store it (in terms of temperature, etc) when I'm not playing it. I really don't want to mess it up, so please help a brotha out here. Right now its pretty hot where I live (80s-90s), so...give me your advice.

Well, I've been told several times that the ideal place to store your guitar is in the case, in a cool dry spot. However, that doesn't facilitate playing very well. Extremes are death to a guitar. Cold, Hot, or Humid. I just try to keep my guitar stands away from walls which are the outside of my building, and away from vents.

So, I've been keeping mine in my basement for a year and a half, which is pretty much how you described. It's always cooler in my basement, and never really humid or dry down here. Is that how its supposed to be, or more humid or dry???

I believe you can buy semi cheap hygrometers at most hardware stores to measure the humidity.

I have absolutely no f-ing idea what a good hygrometer will run you, but since they can insert them in almost every decent cigar box, I don't think they should cost too much.

And there are guitar humidifiers...I don't have one, cause my guitar is too cheap to REALLY worry about, but I guess they keep them at the right percentage...

Hygrometers cost between $15 - $50. You can buy one from Ebay, Radio Shack or your local Cigar store. It is a lot easier to humidify or dehumidify a case than a whole room, so keep the guitar in the case when your not playing it and it will last you a lot longer.

The only problem is that I don't have a hardshell case. I didnt want to shell out the extra dough for one when I bought the D-15, so I'm waiting until my next paycheck to get one. I do have a soft-shell case, but I don't think that will be too protective.
