P.A. speakers

Unread post by TimmyJ4140 » Mon Mar 31, 2008 1:26 pm

Hey fellas, I'm lookin' to buy a pair of (preferably) active P.A. speakers as an upgrade to the sound system at my church. They need to be able to fill a room about 40 feet wide by about 90-100 feet long, I'd run them from a Mackie CFX16 passive mixer, which has both 1/4" and XLR outs. Coming through the mixer are about 5 vocal mics, direct out from my acoustic guitar amp, line out from a Yamaha digital piano, and line out from a Yamaha electronic drum set. I need something with relative clarity, as I'm trying to convince my pastor that this needs to happen, we're about ready to blow the installed speakers, which were designed pretty much for speech only, and were installed before I can remember. If I could keep a pair of speakers under $1000, that'd be fantastic. Suggestions?

I'm also not averse to a pair of passive speakers, I have a Yamaha mixer with 2 300W power amps built in that I could run them through, active speakers would just be easier (albeit a bit more expensive). Fire away.

i would probably go with these:

but they're 1000 without shipping/tax
i don't own any mackie stuff, but they are generally regarded as good and the reviews on mf are all good

someone else might be able to give you a better idea of what is good, as i have never set up church stuff and i dont use active speakers

Yeah, I was looking at both those and the SRM450s, I've heard them in use, and they're not bad. I was just looking for other opinions as well, I can get pretty set on one thing unless I've got someone to point at something else and say "Hey, what about that?" Thanks Joe.

you cant go wrong with jbl or mackie

why would you run one mixer into another powered mixer? do you already have that yamaha? if so, it should work fine, but if not there is no reason to buy two mixers; just get a stand-alone amp.
