Homemade guitar...

Unread post by DreaminBassMunky » Tue Jun 24, 2003 10:29 am

Alright my dad and I have decided to undergo the grueling process of making our own electric guitar. He's a carpenter so the body shouldn't be a problem. It's all the wiring and stuff that is gonna bog us down. The electric I am playing on right now was made by his friend, it's a Fender look a like, it plays great though! I would just like to have my very own guitar, that I can give a nick name or something corny like that, to. I was just wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of any good guitar making resources, or if anyone on these boards have made their own guitars before?

Oh by the way, if we end up going through with this, which we most likely will, what kind of guitar should I knock off. A strat or an LP, or maybe some other guitar. Or maybe something really original looking? You tell me.

dont know anything about making guitars but you should definitely put your own spin into the design some how. that way, you will have the only on in the world like it. there are a million LP look alikes. what if a strat and an LP had a baby.....mmmmm very interesting. 8)

wiring is actually not as tough as it seems. i've done a lot of work on my telecaster because of a buzzing pickup and i found it really was quite simple. i'm no wiring expert, but if you keep it simple (which will usually be more reliable), then it shouldn't be too hard.

You mentioned wiring being something you were concerned about.. http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/menu.html is a great resource for strat wiring. They have the "stock" wiring if you want to go with that and some modifications you can do.. I recently decided rewired my old Squier Strat and used that page as my source for info.

if youre looking to buy a wiring kit or you need any parts or tools, http://www.carvin.com has stuff, and http://www.cfmartin.com has woodworking stuff that your dad might need. i wouldnt buy the pickups from carvin tho. go with dimarzo or seymour duncan. as far as the style of the guitar, do something original. there's this band called the heavils that builds their own guitars. one is made from a toilet seat. theyre all 5 strings, with 2 bass strings and 3 guitar strings. you probably dont want anything that radical, but try and be creative.
fornit some fornus

Yeah building your own electric sounds pretty cool. One day I want to build my own acoustic. My budy and I were playing the other day and in the middle of a solo I just felt like I wanted to switch tunings. What got me thinking back to the 80's with the cool double neck guitars. I want to build a double neck acoustic. I also want to some how put a wammy bar on it. I think that would be really cool. Ok, so I'm kdding. Sorta.
