Preamp suggestions?

Unread post by BenPezzner » Sat Feb 02, 2008 3:18 pm

I'm looking for a good preamp to record cello with. Can anyone make a suggestion? I'd like to keep it under $1000.

Thanks,
Ben

Really Nice Preamp (RNP), single channel for $500.

RNP is a stereo pre, Buffalo. (Pez, you should mic your cello in stereo anyway.)

But I second that. It is a high-quality box. Probably the best box new under $500. Another idea is the Sound Devices MP-2. It's discontinued so you'll have to buy used but sounds excellent and can be found under $500.

Well I'll be a bare assed baboon. I may have mixed that up with the brick. Either way, kickass pre for 500 bucks.

There are a great number of excellent pre+A/D combos out there available for not a whole lot more than $500 if you want to look into it. A good A/D is almost as important as a good pre, imo.

I've heard quite good things about this one, for example. TC makes great stuff.

How about the RNP and then an apogee duet? That would be right around 1000. Pez do you use Logic or Garageband?

Ohhh I somehow had missed the Duet until now.

I bet that combo would be just money. Not to mention it also will work in reverse as a DAC.

I support this idea wholeheartedly.

Ah, if by 'A/D' you mean 'recording interface' then yes, I have one (I'm a little slow today ;) I'm using Sony Acid Pro on a Dell laptop, so I'd like to keep it USB.

Here is what I have so far: http://www.pezshow.com/specs.html

As you can see, I've built myself a kickass recording studio... now it's time to fill it with equally kickass equipment.

The "dream team" if you will. I have had my eye on this combo for a while. I think I'll pull the trigger very soon.
