Advice on effects for a new D&T cover duo
Hi all!
i'm about to start a new D&T cover duo with a friend of mine, we were planning on rehearsing Bartender, Two Step, #41, Lover Lay Down and Crash Into Me first... can you tell me anything about the settings Tim uses for his effects? (like the delay and volume swells on Bartender, or that sick sitar-like sound in some versions of Two Step..) and which effects Tim uses in each song?
I've read on his site what kind of gear he uses, but I can't still single out all the effects by listening to the songs...
Don't know if this thread should go here or somewhere else, anyway please help me!

maybe even an analog mxr delay to go with it. the morley is for the swell.

Isn't the ernie ball mono volume pedal better? I think tim uses that...

your right. when i go for the tim sound thats just what i use. boss loop, two boss delays, and morley. I'm just guessing about that analog delay but i think that would be perfect for when he speeeds and slows the tempo.

Got it, you're really helping me out! What about a wah pedal for the acoustic? Something not too expensive, but that 's still not going to blow up with feedback he moment I plug it in?

You can buy the Morley Wah/Volume Pedal (that's what Tim used back in the Luther College).JustanItalianWanderer wrote:Got it, you're really helping me out! What about a wah pedal for the acoustic? I have one and it's nice, although the Wah is not great...

Uhmm... I bought the ernie ball vp one yesterday (they didn't have the morley anyway) but I must say I can'get anything like Tim's volume swells...How does he manage to make the guitar sound like a breath instrument? When I use the pedal, the sound just goes higher and sharper (not in the musical term
, not mellower. Geez it's hard to explain by writing
anyway, any help?

Don’t feel bad friend, swell is a very complicated technique to pull of and Tim is the master of it. It was take a lot of practice. You probably know this, but swell is not just using volume it is delay and volume mixed together. For every song you will have to set your delay differently. You may even have to do two different delays for a song. I can’t think of any reason why a waa would hurt your guitar, but then again, I don’t see how a waa will help you get a Timmy sound. He uses A) an excellent sounding guitar B) delay C) Volume pedal. That’s really all you will need. Well there’s D) a large stockpile of joints

Yeah I was just curious about the wah...
Sooo...let's say I have a multieffect station with the delay option, not a pedal, AND the ernie ball vp...which would be the delay settings for a song like, say, Bartender?
If you're tired of answering question, don't worry about it
I'll just have to experiment a bit

Its important to have your delay match the tempo of your playing so a tap tempo feature is very nice to have. For your swells, start with the volume at 0. Hit a strings or strings and then raise the volume up. this cuts the attack sound (plucking the string) and gives you a much smoother, orchestral strings sound. Play around with the other settings to get different sounds.

Re: Advice on effects for a new D&T cover duo
IMO, a multi-effect pedal is not a good choice in the long term. It's much better to have the effects separately: each one will be much more powerful and you'll have complete control over them.
So, for the Tim sound, I would advice the Boss DD6 or D-20 as mentioned for the delay and the Ernie Ball (maybe the Morley Volume/Wah as an alternative).
To get a nice "violin sound", and as a first approach, put the Level and Feedback of the DD6 around half way up (or more) and match the tempo to the song (the DD6 as a tap tempo feature). Then, it's just about starting with the volume pedal from zero and rise as quickly as possible... and, of course, coordinate everything...
Good luck!
