Electric Guitar Suggestions??

Unread post by CWMCALL » Thu Oct 25, 2007 10:10 am

I'm thinking about picking up my first electric guitar, I don't need anything too high class, just something to screw around with. I will probably spend no more than $800 for the guitar and amp. I really like the sound of the semi-hollow bodies. Does anybody have any suggestions on guitars and/or amps?

does anybody have any experience with the "Epiphone Dot"?

I love the way they look but everyone I've played hasn't given me the sound I expect it to. Putting on some nice after market electronics would make those guitars much more BA IMO

What style of music do you plan on playing with it? That makes a big difference.

you name it...rock, blues, country, etc. I really won't be playing anything very serious. I just want something that I can take to my basement with a beer and make a lot of noise

I had a mild distortion on one at Guitar Center and busted out the Jimi Thing riff. Sounded awesome. I've been thinking of picking one up for years.

One of those paired with a Fender Blues Jr (399), and a decent overdrive pedal and you will have a good setup. Maybe down the road replace the PUPs with some Gibson '57s and you will have a great ax.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

If you really want to get the most guitar for your dollar, take a look at a schecter (schecterguitars.com)... they sell them at guitar center for around the $500 range. They are very well made for the price. I have 2 high end prs guitars and i've been looking at a schecter c1 plus that plays and looks almost as perfect as my prs guitars that i paid over 2 grand for. They are also very good for a variety of styles. A few of them have a coil tap feature that can make the humbuckers sound like single coil (fender strat) pickups. Another good thing is that if your looking to spend around 800 total, a 500 guitar would leave you with enough to get a decent amp.

I have an Epiphone Les Paul.......I like it but then again I really suck at playing. It seems to stay in tune and I think it has a great sound.

Who'd you order from? Most of the big web retailers are pretty good with returns and have actual humans answering the phones.

my gift cards were for amazon.com so I ordered through amazon but it says that the guitar will ship from musiciansfriend.com. We'll see how it goes...

Musician's Friend was good to me in the past. I haven't dealt with them since they became Guitar Center, fwiw.
