Help! Broken guitar question.
So some drunk sack of shit fell on my guitar or something at the Gorge campground, because last night I realized there's a huge crack in the front now. It's about 8 inches long and is a few inches away from my soundhole, running in the same direction as the neck (vertical if my guitar were to be on a stand or something). To make matters worse, I realized that the beam of wood on the inside of the guitar under the crack is also split. Is this fixable by a luthier? I'm shitting bricks right now; it's not a cheap guitar and I don't have assloads of money for a new one. It's like someone beat up my girlfriend and now she's in a coma.

yea if it is repairable it will be pretty expensive I think unfortunately. I would think they would have to replace the whole top?taparoo wrote:I'd take it to your local guitar/music shop and have them check it out and possibly give you a quote or something. Good luck man.
I do not know much about luthier-ing or the repair of guitars, but in most "accidents" it seems like people get a new whole part of that guitar, or a new guitar altogether. Sort of like cars sometimes when you get in wrecks and such.

Thanks for your replies. I went and talked to a guy at Guitar Center (their luthier is out til Tuesday) and he told me it would cost so much to repair that it's not even really worth the trouble. I got the guitar for about 450, and he said repairs would probably be around 300, so it's almost like having a totaled car. THIS SUCKS. Time to figure out what new guitar to buy.

Do you like a challenge?? There is a book written by a fellow called Dan Erlewine that is available from STEWMAC, a kit guitar supplier, that covers all kinds of repairs to everything guitar. He is a master builder and reapirs expert. It is written for us average people but can be used by a professional luthier as well.
I am in the process of studying it but in a quick glance through the book I do remember sections on how to repair cracks on the top. He explains in deatil how to do the repairs.
You have nothing to lose right?? You might be able to salvage the guitar and save $$ rather than having to buy a new one. If it works great!!
