USB V.S. Firewire Recording
Ok, so for the past year I’ve been using an M-Audio Mobilepre USB audio interface for all of my recordings. The other day when I tried to use it, all I got was static. After checking everything else, I can conclude that the Mobilepre has officially shit the bed. Now, I’ve been looking at options that will not only solve my current dilemma of not being to record at all, but also possibly use this as an opportunity to improve my entire recording process. I’ve been looking at the usual suspects, but I see that a lot of interfaces offer 'Firewire' capabilities over standard USB outputs. Does anyone have any experience with using a firewire setup? It so, do you have any to recommend? I’m using Cakewalk guitar pro tracks 3 to record, would that be compatible with firewire? How do I hook a firewire up to my computer? Does anyone know the pros and cons of recording with firewire over standard USB? I know that’s a lot of questions, but if anybody has any input about this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for reading.

The biggest difference you will notice is that the Firewire will have no latency or delay time because it transfers the signal much faster.
In order to use firewire you need a firewire port, look for something that says IEEE 1394 that will be your firewire port. Depending on your computer, you may not even have one, possibly only usb.
The presonus firebox is really nice and it comes with great preamps for low cost. For a little more money the firepod has a lot more inputs if you are recording a band.
Good Luck

Hey thanks for the fast responce. I think that I may have a firewire port on my Dell Laptop (Inspiron 8500), but it doesnt look like most firewire ports. Click on the link that is down bellow. Does that mean that I can run a firewire into there?? That firepod would be overkill for me, and very expensive. But that presonus firebox looks to be right up my alley. thanks again for the help so far..RunsWithBuffalo wrote:The biggest difference you will notice is that the Firewire will have no latency or delay time because it transfers the signal much faster.

tits!RunsWithBuffalo wrote:Yep, thats a firewire port and any firewire device will work.
If were to buy something like the Presonus Firebox would it come with a cable that will attach to that 1394 port, or will I have to get something aftermarket? Im just not sure if that port is a industry standard for firewire applications, because I know that some newer computers have firewire ports that look like the ones on the back of the firebox and other recording interfaces; and have that three legged star symbol.
Also do you think that my cakewalk recording program will find that port? Ive never even noticed it was there till today. Anyway thanks for all the help so far! The more I look into this firewire Idea, the more Im starting to think it will be a major advantage over USB.

Should work great with cakewalk. I just saw on musiciansfriend that they are giving you a free condenser mic (mxl 990, which is not bad, i used it to record vocals on that song i did for the movie a few threads below) and it comes with a rebate for free sensenheiser headphones. This looks like a steal!
