New Taylor Owner

Unread post by p1trick_82 » Fri Dec 08, 2006 3:53 pm

I've GASed a x14ce for some time and finally had the chance to buy a used but new one,I read threads on the 314 and everybody seemed to be pleased with theirs so I figured I'd feel the same way.I didn't have a chance to play the guitar beforehand so my only option was to read some reviews

I have a seagull so this would be a nice upgrade...well that's what I thought

The taylor neck is so sweet to play and the x14's fit perfectly in my lap... I'm more of a dread guy but I was looking for a nice little guitar for fingerpicking...so i played a few chords and wasn't impressed at alllll

I went and played my S6 and they sounded somewhat similar to each other...I know you can't compare a dread with a GC, but this taylor should be highER end right ? and the 314 is nearly 10x the price of my S6? There's just no projection in the sound...will plugging in the ES system make any difference ?

will a new set of strings bring this guitar to "life" ?
the strings on the 314 are probably old so I'm gonna buy some strings and see how it works out

Is it ok to take your guitar to a shop and A/B with the guitars they have ?

I'm really trying to find a reason to keep this guitar

314's are fine. Playing guitars in stores sometimes doesnt help you decide if they have crappy strings, usually D'Addario EXP strings are stock on most guitars and they are terrible for tonality. You could have just asked if they could string it up with some better quality strings so you can try it. I am thinking my next acoustic will be a 614ce or straight to the 914ce.

Not to get off topic, but get the 614ce SaxMan. You won't regret it for a second. It's the best Taylor I've ever played, and I have a 714 and have played an 814ce. Like someone said before me, change the strings, put on Elixers or something, and you'll see a huge difference. The 314's are amazing, and will probably be my next Taylor.
My guitars:
Taylor 714
Taylor 614ce
Martin Sigma DR-41
Epiphone Chet Atkins SST (Ebony)
Danelectro 56-U2 reissue
Fender American Deluxe Strat
Fender Aerodyne Telecaster
BC Rich Eagle Custom

yes, they do. as for p1trick, it's really your own fault. While I think the 314 is an awesome awesome guitar, others might think it sounds like a POS. Even though you might hear so many good things about a guitar, and EVERYBODY might love it, it doesn't mean you will. Always always play before you buy... That's why buying a guitar online is so risky.

This goes for every guitar and guitar company out there, even for the larry lovers on here who think those guitars are untouchable and godly

it's alllll personal preference, and that's the way it should be.

this one was used and the previous owner sold it with some medium D'Addario's on

grachi

I guess it is my fault...I was just so excited in getting a taylor and the stores I went to didn't have any 314's so I got carried away... I'm going to buy some elixir lights this week and see if it will make any difference to me,if not I try to sell this one and test some larrivee's and martins

thanks for the advice

It's no problem, and now you know for the future. I hope the elixirs add new life to it though, cause it is a nice guitar! (even if you don't think the sound is there) :D

best of luck to you either way
