Martin guitar kits
Martin guitar kits
anyone ever buy one of these? It seems like a good deal if they sound right after you put it together.

I know there are a few guys on here that have done this and know what they are doing, so maybe the will chime in. I was seriously considering making a kit last summer but did not have enough time. I did a lot of research and ended up finding that martin kits are not the best deal for a first time builder (Very vague instructions), look into the StewMac kits, they are a lot better. Also, don't plan on making a kit to save money, it will not work out in the long run. Only do it if it's just something that interests you that you want to do.

i have researched this heavily and i can honestly say that it is an art form, not a project or a craft. if you want to do it be prepared to commit serious time and money into tools and supplies, and dont expect a martin quality instrument. the draw of it is that you created it, not that it sounds or plays fantastically.

wouldn't that take the point out of it sorta? having someone else contribute to the actual construction and everything?checkii wrote:i was very close to doing one. but i chickened out. i only would do it if i could get the martin logo headstock (yes, im a brand whore) and if i had all of the tools and a seasoned luthier to help.
my grandfather makes mandolins and banjos by hand out in texas. I was thiking about buying a kit and having him put it together for me.

I'm sure there can be multiple intentions in purchasing a guitar kit.Grachi wrote:wouldn't that take the point out of it sorta? having someone else contribute to the actual construction and everything?checkii wrote:i was very close to doing one. but i chickened out. i only would do it if i could get the martin logo headstock (yes, im a brand whore) and if i had all of the tools and a seasoned luthier to help.

Building acoustics is not very easy. You need good clamps, a nice large work surface and good tools to do the job well. I know a fair bit about wood working so something like that has always interested me. And maybe I will invest in a kit and just make my own label for it
