amp question

Unread post by Jay » Thu May 29, 2003 7:21 pm

all year i used my roommate's amp to play my les paul, and now i am home and need one of my own...but i was wondering, maybe a stupid question...do they make amps for both acoustic and electric guitars all in one? they always seem to have completely different features and looks even.

also, what is a good brand of amp, other than Mar$hall? :P

line 6 has an acoustic/electric amp if im not mistaken. theyre good, but lack something compared to marshall.. its hard to explain. also mesa boogie amps are good, but those are for metal most of the time. (metallica uses them)

i have an acoustic and have never played it through an acoustic amp. i own a line 6 but it is for electric. i just use an acoustic DI and that adds a lot to it. if you want it to sound acoustic you can just plug straight into the PA but if you want a little crunch you can get that with an amp.

really i don't think you ever really "need" an amp for an acoustic. if you got a good pre-amp then you'll be set to play in any amp or PA you come across.

if your acoustic doesnt sound acoustic enough thru a regular amp, boss makes an acoustic simulator pedal. i know tim uses it, and so does the guitarist from pearl jam
as for other good amps, if you want a tube amp, fender is the way to go. they also have that cyber twin series that has lots of effects and such. ive heard those line 6 modeling amps are good too.
fornit some fornus

so can i just buy an amp specifically for my les paul and then plug my acoustic into it? it's not gonna be a routine thing, i just want to be able to if i ever want to.

Jay i myself own a solid state marshall 15 watt amp. i can plug my godin into it, use the humbuckers (w/ or w/o the coil taps on) and it still sounds amazing. i can also switch to the acoustic bridge and itll sound incredibly close to an acoustic guitar. HOWEVER (this is a big one) IF YOU GET A TUBE AMP AND YOU TRY TO PLAY AN ACOUSTIC THROUGH IT IT WILL SOUND LIKE BUT! - hope i helped :)

thanks shane...i will most likely get a solid state amp. my electric has no acoustic pickups...if i plug my acoustic into it, will i have feedback problems or anything? it'll be the taylor 814ce with fishman blender electronics.

what is the point of an acoustic amp if you can plug into anything? the only thing i notice is that they dont have distortion circuits that i have seen...

its just different how its set up... im lucky with how good it sounds out of my marshall. just letting you know though - tube amps sound better for electric guitars AND theyre easier to repair. if my solid state amp breaks im screwed. tube amps are more expensive... a lot more expensive. solid state amps are not as loud as tube amps. a 15 watt tube can easily play over a set of drums... solid cant.

sounds good. my roommate has a Peavy solid state amp which sounds better than my other roommate's $1000 fender amp with the distortion on. but on clean, that fender sounds amazing.

so you think marshall is the best way to go? i don't need a lot of wattage, because if i ever do end up on a stage, i assume i'd buy the equipment then...or have it donated. :)

sigh...more money out of my empty empty pockets...

first off fender ANYTHING sucks with distortion. fender is made for clean. also peavy is pretty good, ive used one, but i like marshall better. i payed around $100 for my 15 watt solid state and i think it sounds good. to obtain the best marshall tone marshall amps have to be turned up half way, so i wouldnt go for buying the biggest amp you can find. (however my friend did just buy a nice 350watt half stack... now THATS an amp.. hehe.. take over canada with it..) anyway, id go with marshall. and make sure you go with NATURAL REVERB not DIGITAL! :)

editing these

because they stretched the page all out.

are those two worth checking out do you think? 30W seems like a lot though.

it looks like neither one of them has natural reverb? is that expensive? i have no money left.

this is the one i have. it has natural reverb which is less expensive than digital. digital has stuff like chorus and flanger built into the amp, but its best to just get natural. anything with DFX in the name has digital effects.

well cool. so you're happy with this amp? i'll go try them out when i go pick up my taylor. now if they would just call me...

the guy at guitar center told me that employees can buy anything there at cost, but they don't hire college kids cause they will leave in the fall. :?
