Please help with Tim Reynolds tone!

Unread post by ebitz » Wed May 21, 2003 6:33 pm

After seeing a handful of D&T shows I've noticed the sound or tone that tim gets from his guitar on his solos. I've played d-35's and they just don't have sound as "warm" as he gets. I've seen his set up and own a dd-5, I am wondering if it is one piece of equipment that he uses to get this sound or tone or if it is maybe just a combination of everything. I suspect that it may be that he fingerpicks most of the solos, the ring modulator, or possibly the amp? If any understands what I am talking about and could help me out I'd appreciate it.

Eric

I have asked this question (outwardly and to myself) hundreds of times...I do believe that most of it is in "how" he plays it...but I believe also that the SANS AMP DI ACOUSTIC has a great deal to do with it as well...that is just my educated guess, but I have to get one for my 814 soon...to go along with my DD-6 and DL-4 8)

The Sansamp Acoustic DI is great. Tim has 2 in his setup i believe....i'm sure i saw 2 in a pic.

I have the Sansamp and it givs the acoustic the tone that you may be seeking. And it works great with my DD-5 and DL-4 8)

not exactly....probably because I use a Taylor 314ce and not a Martin.

I am still messing around to get THE perfect tone....but it's coming along nicely...

the ring modulator adds a lot. and he doesn't really use any particular amp in his accoustic set-up.

unless tim is playing really fast (ie stream) he uses his fingers.

he has two sansamp DI's because he has two different effects loops and he has an A/B switch for them.

and the volume pedal is his trick to the swells that make it sound like he is playing a cello or other bowed instrument.

here is a link to his website but it is kinda older information

Thanks for the feedback!
I'm not so much lookin for tims spacey effects, but the overall tone of his guitar. I checked out so specs on the sansamp and the ring modulator, neither of which is a cheap item. I'm thinkin the sansamp is the what I'm looking for, but I'm not quite sure what the result of the ring modulator is. What do u guys think?

Eric
