Help ! pick one of thoes guitars or Save?
Ok here is the thing, im gettin a new guitar for my Birthday, But it can go as far as 550$ , now for that price i found a SWEET "lookin" guitar , with also good reviews, its an Ovation CS257.
OR
i got like 500$ saved so i can add that to the 550$ and get somthing better, but at that range i found 10 guitars, 2 taylors and 8 Martins, coz if im gonna break into my savings it better be a Martin or a Taylor, and ill add a fishman pickup which costs about 100$ coz they're all acoustic guitars with no preamp.
So here they are
Martin 000M 800$
Martin 00015 850$
Martin DM 800$
Martin DR 950$
XC1T Ellipse 900$
Martin D15 850$
Martin 00016GT 1000$
Martin D16GT 1000$
Taylor 214 900$
Taylor 310 1000$
and they all have great reviews but i cant decide coz i live in Egypt and i can't try them so i have to order them from the USA just by reviews.
so help plz i dont know to go with the Ovation till i can offord a really good one, or get one of these guitars, they can all be found on Music123.com.
Thnx alot

First, be careful with that shipping from the US. You'll probably pay taxes in Egypt, and it might increase the price a lot...
Second, saving vs. buying now depends on what you plan to do in the future.
1. If you really need a new guitar now and just want to have some fun and play with friends, then go right away for it
2. If you feel like buying something "more serious", that will last longer and get better with age, save and get a Martin or a Taylor, depending of the kind of sound you're looking for
I had to make that same decision a year ago, and I went for the 2nd choice. Mine was brought from the US by some friends, so I didn't pay anything else.
Wheither way, check the praisedave thread that talks about the details of chosing a guitar in different price ranges...
BTW, where do you live in Egypt? I've a friend that works in Cairo...

Some friends of mine are goin to the US soon, so i wont pay shipping and taxes if they brought it back with them.sfmartins wrote:First, be careful with that shipping from the US. You'll probably pay taxes in Egypt, and it might increase the price a lot...

I love the way the Ovation looks, but still im pretty sure that a Martin will sound better, i still dont know how the whole installing a pickup thing goes in the acoustic, coz they have no preamp except for the DC15E.
and i think i want something that ages well, i dont want a guitar that i would want to upgrade with a better one in 3-4 years.
oh and I also live in Cairo, where does ur friend work?
You'll be happy with any one of those guitars (except for the X1CT Ellipse...never heard of it, unless it's a Martin X series). However, I'd have a hard time dropping $1000 without having played a guitar. There is a huge variety of sound and feel in that list, and you really just won't know what you're getting. I would go to the Martin and Taylor websites and read as much as possible about each guitar, then go to musiciansfriend.com and read all the reviews on each guitar. Then, you *might* have enough info to make a good decision.
About the Ovation, I personally don't like them. I wouldn't spend very much money on a guitar that has a plastic cereal bowl for the back. Some people really like them though. I'd recommend the ^above research for that guitar too.

Where are your friends going in the US?
It is possible to tell the guys in the store in advance to install a pick-up in a D16RGT, for instance (if the store is close to Nazareth, they might even send it to the factory so they install the pick-up there; although it can getter more expensive, it might be a nice option for your situation).
But what kind of music do you want to play with it, because Ovation and Martin/Taylor are quite different...
Anyway, in that price range, you might think of a Larivee. I'm sure someone will mention them...
Also take a look at the other thread about a guitar in that price range to play Pearl Jam and Dave.
IMO, in that price range you should definitely get a all solid wood guitar.
My friend works for a Computer company here in Portugal (Novabase ?), and he's in a project in Cairo.

Just pointing out, buying a guitar for the name is not a smart thing. I agree that Martins and Taylors are very nice, but Larrivees are (IMHO) just as good. And they are less expensive.RaSh wrote:Alot of ppl are sayn good stuff about the Larrivee, also on the praisedave, but i want a "Martin" coz if im gonna be Broke, then i better have a Martin to ease the pain lol
