Need Some Guitar Questions Cleared Up

Unread post by jsgksu » Tue May 20, 2003 4:11 pm

Alright, Ive started thinking that the Taylor 310cd limited I wanna get will probably be pretty hard to find by the time I scrape up enough money for it. So Im thinking about other guitars around that price range. I am going to get a Martin HD-35 when Im older and have more money so dont turn this into a buy a Martin, or any other guitar discussion please. I wanna get a Taylor, probably 400 series guitar, maybe 500, not sure yet though. So I was looking on their site and Ive always wanted a dreadnought guitar but then I saw the 414ce, and I think it looks amazing. Couple of questions though.
1. Is Ovangkol nice wood, never heard of it?
2. Why are the *14 series so much more expensive then the *10 series, there seems to be a pretty big price difference (especially in the higher end models)
3. Are Taylors overprice because Ive always thought a Martin HD35 to be an amazing guitar and the 600 series of Taylors cost just as much?
4. And lastly, I live in Northwest Pennsylvania and have never been to a big guitar shop at all, just two little ones, one at home, one at school. Is there a huge guitar store anywhere around my area? I want to go somewhere that would have all the Taylors, Martins and others Im thinking about, or at least the majority of them.
I think I had more questions before writing this but I cant remember them now, I will post them in here later if I can think of them. Thanks for any help on any of these topics.

1) i like ovangkol, its very nice. i like rosewood better, but thats just my opinion.
2) i believe the x14 model is more expensive because its one of the more versatile body styles. just my opinion.
3) taylors are not overpriced, you have to realize the list price is not as much they are going to be sold for. maple is basically priced as much as east indian rosewood anyway.
4) http://216.120.92.69/dealers/northeast.asp#pennsylvania

i hope ive helped! :)

Shane thanks for taking the time to read all that and answer the all the questions. I know there is a difference between list price and actual price but still I didnt think that the list price for a Martin HD35 and a Taylor 600 would be the same. Is it safe to assume you can take around 65% of list price to get the actual price of the guitar, thats what it was for the 310ce limited I wanted. Fire, how did you get that good of a deal, just got lucky? And Ive seen that list of guitar stores you linked for me (thanks) but there is a lot of them and I dont know which of them are huge and worth visiting so I need a little more specific info from someone maybe in my area. Thanks for your help.

jsgksu how fire got that good of a deal is a LONG story... anyway, you can probably take about 40% off the list price to get what people will sell it for, at least in big walmart type guitar shops. DO NOT HOLD ME TO THIS!!! - it will vary. instead of getting an HD-35 id get a taylor 814... or 810.. or even an 815. BY THE WAY taylor revoiced their guitars, and they now have the more bassy sound that martin fans feel they lack. THIS STATEMENT WAS TAKEN OUT BECAUSE IT MAY START ANOTHER MARTIN/TAYLOR WAR :)

Well Id like each, I was thinking of getting a low end Taylor then a really nice Martin when Im older, maybe better than the HD-35. Thanks a lot for telling me about the revoicing of the Taylors, now Im all fucked up. I just need to go play a shit load of guitars somewhere, where is there a huge, super-mega guitar store around here, anybody?

Yeah, but like I said, there is a lot of them, and I only know of like one store on there. I dont know which ones are good, big places with lots of guitars to play, thats where I need help. I would be willing to drive 2 hours to a really nice big place with a nice selection as opposed to the closest place that might not have the best selection. And I dont know which ones are good or bad, so thats where I need the help. Understand?

Exactly... go play them, decide what's best FOR YOU. You can't make statements like "Taylors are just better than martins period" and "oh, well the tone of taylor's is just so much better than any martin" (i just made these up) - EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT OPINION - I like the tone and body of Martin's better... does that mean that you or shane should feel the exact same way I do? No, we just have different opinions and like different things... another thing i hate is recommending against a guitar when you have yet to even play it (i.e. when certain people [no names] lambasted the d-15... without ever having seen or played one)

Okay, rant's over. Bottom line - go play each one, listen to your heart, and decide which one you like best.

Sounds good, there still is a few questions that can be answered without controversy though, any help?

be patient...go to a the smallest place you can find that is licened to seel Taylors/Martins, and feel it out...that is what I did...try your hand at different guitars until you find what you think to be "the one"...even then though...if the deal isn't good enough, then wait it out...make sure you get the best possible deal...every guitar I have (Chet, LP DELUXE LTD> REISSUE, and now the 814ce) I got from REAL deals...but I went through so many saying, "this is it...I'm getting this one"...I was almost going to buy a 2002 812ce a few weeks ago...but I waited on it...played my cards the best I knew how (and by the grace of God), I got my REAL deal...don't jump on anything...the key is patience

I guess it was just one question, where to go and play the guitars. Fire, I dont understand your opinion on going to the smallest place I can find. I know a place in Pittsburgh, which Ive never been to, but when looking for guitars I called all the ones in the area of two hours from my house and this place had the best deals, like 2-300 cheaper then the other places. I just want to go to the biggest place I can find because they'll most likely have the biggest selection to play from. Then when I choose to buy the guitar Ill call the place I mentioned or other places to try to find a good deal. I guess Im just looking for a big place with a big selection just to try out as many guitars as possible, not to buy one, is that a good idea?
