Taylor 214-E opinions

Unread post by partyboy7903 » Sun Jun 18, 2006 9:20 am

Hey y'all. I'm new to the board and I've got a question. Anybody out there who owns or has played the Taylor 214e what do you think of it compared to the 314 series. Let me know

I wouldn't buy any Taylor below a 300 series. At that point, you're just paying for a mediocre guitar with a brand name on it. I believe they use laminates in the 100 and 200 series. For that money, look at Larivees.

And yes, I have played both. I own a 314ce, and have no complaints. I didn't spend enough time playing the 200 series, I was immediately turned off by the sound.

I've never played the 214e, but I do know that it is made of all solid wood. It has the spruce top and solid sapele back and sides. If I were you though, I would save a little bit longer and get the 314ce. From what I've heard, they play pretty nice. I love Taylors!!!!

the 214 is an entry level taylor and it sounds just ok. For the money consider an alvarez or a larrivee which both use higher quality tone woods and use scalloped bracing. taylors sound great buy you gotta pay a lot more for it.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

I agree with Matt in Belloit, who agrees with Mr. Buffalo..get a Washburn/Tak/Alv. Just listen to it when you play it (214)...usually sounds pretty muddy

The 100 and 200 Series aren't made of real (solid) wood.

get a Larrivee

I just checked the Taylor website again and it says that the 200 series has b/s of Solid Sapele. The 100 series says its b/s are made of sapele laminate. It's not really a big deal though. How do Larivees play, I never played one?

i like my 214

it plays real well, but the sound isn't amazing. not bad, but not superb. sounds decent, really.

i've played some larivees, they played like shit but sounded pretty good, so you should try out each guitar before you buy it.

Agreed. I found this acoustics store downtown and this guy sold probably 10-15 different Larrivee models. I played most of them looking to be blown away. They are great guitars with their own amazing sound. But I still feel Martin builds the best guitars for strumming. Although, I would def consider a Larrivee if continuing my education in fingerstyle.

get a Larrivee
from taylor's website:
On the 214, solid sapele adds depth to the sparkle of a Sitka top, filling in a full range of tonal possibilities.
that is the bck and sides.

oh, and the 200 series is way over priced. i would never suggest paying that much for that little of guitar.

It's solid wood all around. There is no laminate on the guitar, anywhere.
