Zoom A2

Unread post by dmb66 » Mon Apr 10, 2006 11:56 pm

I've just purchased a new guitar, step one in my upgrade plan, and I would like to pick up a decent multieffects pedal to complement the new axe. I've been reading in acoustic guitar magazine about the Zoom A2 acoustic effects pedal, and they have nothing but praise. BUT, I'd like to get some of your opinions (after all, you guys are what led me to Larrivee). I've included a link. Do you think it's worth the money, or should I hold out? Thanks.

(quite a bit of info on there too)

I have the zoom 504II acoustic and it's a complete shit. That one is just a little bit more expensive...

Buy a nice boss delay (dd6) or something and you'll be much better.
You can also buy an amp with dsp effects (ultrasound AG50-DS3).

yeah multi effects blow, get individual pedals. collect them slowly over time. Boss makes great pedals and they are built to last. Besides, you dont want to be onstage somewhere and have to bend down to turn a know to change your effect.

Look on ebay for some used Boss delay, chorus, tremolo, compression sustainer, and maybe an octaver. Those are just basics but go to http://www.bossusa.com and check out their demos, pretty cool

Multi Effects in general tend not to be good I agree. but ZOOMs especially suck ass!

If you really want one, I'd say the Boss GT-6 or GT-8 is the way to go. Line 6 also specializes in that area.

Quick question, what do you want the effect pedal to do for you?

Well, I am basically looking for something that can give me some decent sounding reverb, delay here and there, though I don't really need a looper, and occasional overdrive/crunch sound. Mainly, I want something to boost how my acoustic sounds through the PA and to give me some basic tone options. I'm not looking for drum machines or modelers, though this one apparently has it. Also, a chromatic tuner would be a nice benefit.

youre asking too much of a multi, all of those effects are gonna be poor quality, the only real purpose of a multi, imo, is to fuck around with in practicing, the quality isnt good enough for live sound or recording

I still say go with individual pedals. Start with a DL-4. It has all the delay you could ever want as well as a 28 second loop sampler. I got mine new for 219.00 and its the best pedal ive ever had. Then as you get more money together you can build your collection. I have about 600 worth in pedals but it took me three years to get there. Im glad i didnt get a multi effects because they are useless for recording and live play. They are fun to fuck around with, but thats about it.

The digitech bad monkey overdrive pedal is a steal at 39.99 at musician's friend btw. That or a boss distortion for the same price, depends on the sound you want, the dist was just to harsh for what i wanted.

I also got an ARION octave pedal for 19.99 and it works fine. Not as good as a boss, but its more of a novelty pedal anyways and not used all that much.

hmm so I'm thinking the general consensus is no then. I found a Boss digital reverb pedal on EBay for around 50 bucks. I believe they retail much much higher, so I'm a little skeptical.

I don't know your actual necessities, but for reverb you might just use your amp and use that money for a nice effect...

Just my two cents.
