Gear for cleaning
Gear for cleaning
I want my new guitar to last...well as long as it possibly can becuase I have offically fallin in love with the sound. Main thing is...I'm not all that confident when it comes to maintanence. I would like to know what everyone recomends for string cleaning, humidifying, keeping that SHINE that makes the grain look AMAZING. I also keep it in the hard shell case when not playing instead of on a guitar stand (i have one just fear for the finish's life when if comes to my tool of a roommate)....what do u all do??

I don't shine mine that often (guitar that is
) but when I do, I use Martin guitar polish. As far as strings I don't really clean them I may wipe them down from time to time with any kind of cloth but if they are that bad just change them. I live in Florida so I don't have a humidifier (sp?) the air here is humid enough IMO.

Cleaning the fretboard - Lemon Oil
Make strings clean and last longer - GHS Fast Fret
Planet Waves In-Case Humidifer & Gauge or Dampit soundhole cover; keep humidity between 40-50%. I would recommend keeping the guitar in its case.

everyone take a deep breathe. calm down.
i have heard lemon oil is veery bad for your guitar.
All I use it some martin spray crap I bought for $9 at gutiar center. It's supposed to clean and polish, i like it.
when you change your strings, try keeping the bottom 3 on, and clean the top half of your fretboard, then do the same after replacing the top 3. make sense?
keep in case, humidifier, dont play when drinking, you should be golden.

Someone mentioned that too. Its 50/50 on that though, so I dont know what to believe. I heard people even using napatha (lighter fluid) to clean their guitars on AGF Forums, seems a little extreme to me.czech wrote:everyone take a deep breathe. calm down.

I used that to remove the residue left from a pickguard. Works very well. But for everyday use, no point.GrateDMB21 wrote:Someone mentioned that too. I also have Virtuoso Polish/Cleaner but I dont think it's any better than using a damp cloth. I didn't notice the difference anyway.
lemon oil contains citric acid which will eat away at the finish of your guitar. i suggest just buying somethign from a reputable company designed to clean and polish a guitar.GrateDMB21 wrote:Someone mentioned that too. Everytime I change my strings I:
1. Take fine steel wool over the frets(.0001)
2. Wipe off dust with damp, non abrasive rage(old sock or piece of t-shirt)
3. Apply lemon oil to fret board(make sure it's not a wax based oil)
It's also important to:
1. Keep guitar in guitar case whenever you aren't playing it
2. If fine wood(usually expensive guitars) place guitar humidifier in soundhole
3. Place damp rag in guitar case by the neck.
This is what my old guitar teacher taught me. I trust his advice as he is a luthier.
