John Mayer effects
What effects does John Mayer use on the John Mayer Trio album? I will probably be getting a Fender American Deluxe Strat soon, so guitar difference shouldnt be an issue.

You'd be surprised. I too have an american strat and remember how the origianly pickups sounded....it really isnt that close. John's pickups (Big Dippers and vintage, Im sure) are much brighter and have more attack then a regular Fender neck pickup. I suggest getting a Texas Speacial middle and a vintage Neck. I dont really use the middle pickup, but my favorite possitios are the neck and middle/neck. Putting those two pickups together is perfect imo.guitardmb wrote:What effects does John Mayer use on the John Mayer Trio album? And off the top of my head, I think you need a Blues Driver.....and tube amp. Basically for that basic driving sound he gots off of Who Did You Think I Was.

Re: John Mayer effects
As for the guitar. Do you know if I can get an American Strat with his pickups, or is that something i would have to do after I buy the guitar. Keep in mind, im talking the $1100 American Strat with the.....dont know the name.......but it has a button on one of the knobs, and sounds really bluesy clean. I dont know if thats the guitar you were thinking of or not. But if it was.....can i get it like that, how much extra if not, and how much extra if i can?Beauford33 wrote:You'd be surprised. For the effects, I already have a boss blues driver, and I have a '75 Fender Vibro Champ Amp. So it should be alright if thats all i need.
Thanks for your help.

Re: John Mayer effects
You can go out and buy Fender Texas Speacials pickups for around $120, however you can get an individual pickups for $50ish as well as '69 vintage. For the music I play, all I need is the middle and neck pick ups. To tell the truth, my pickup switch never really leaves the middle/neck or neck position (same with john, with the exception of going to the bridge/middle position for Back to You and Somethings Missing). And the pedal and amp you have are fine. But its all opinion. I personally hated the original Vintage Noisless pickups that come with an American Strat. They are just too clean. Having a SRV and Jimi Hendrix pickup in there...well I dont really even need to say, but it will definitly at a kick to the sound.guitardmb wrote:As for the guitar. Depends on where you go. I just went to guitar center and the guy there did it for 40$. So basically you are looking at spending a total of $1250. But its worth it. Awsome sound, very nice. But maybe if youre buying the guitar at GC, you might be able to see if they will do it for free since youre spending so much money anyway.guitardmb wrote:Ill look into to getting those when I buy the guitar. How much would installation cost? Thanks for all your help!

Alright. I did some searching. Are these the two pickups mentioned earlier?
